what is the widest tire you can fit on a 318is front and rear?
Im thinking 17's but have no idea for width
and what series tire would I put with 17's: 40, 45, 50?
something to fill the gap nicely, I also plan to lower the car
so to keep that in mind with tire profile. thanks in advance eh!

Good wheel size would be somewhere in the 17x7.5-17x8.5 range, all around. As far as tires, stock M3 wheels (non staggered) are 17x7.5 with 235/40/27 rubber.

dont think you could fit 235/40/17 up front with the car lowered, but i may be wrong

so something along the lines of 17x7.5 235/40's on the rear and 17x7.5 225/40s on the front? and its a 5x120 lug pattern correct?, and another question what offset would I want to have with a 7.5 rim or would I have to worry about it, or just keep with stock rim offset?

Lug pattern is 5x120
On a 17x7.5" wheel, I would not go wider than a 235, and that's pushing it. You can easily run 225/45s though.
on a 17x8.5" wheel, I ran 255/40 in the rear with no problems (on DSIIs).
Currently I'm running 225/45 front, 245/40 rear.
Ive got 235/45/17's up front which did rub slightly on the inside on full lock, i fitted some 5mm spacer plates which has cured that though. on the rear ive got 255/40/17's which also rub very slightly on the plastic arch liner if you drive it hard.
Im thinking 225/45/17's for the front when i replace them shorty and 245/40/17's for them rear when i wear them out.
hope this helps.

Ive got 225/45's on 17x7.5 et 38 rims and they fit with no issues. With 7.5 rims an offset of 35-40 will work
