My mother has a 1995 BMW 325i with about 170k on the clock. Starting this summer her A/C blows cold when the compressor kicks on but for some reason it will only kick on for a second and then turns off and the air is no longer cold. We've recharged the system and checked it and it's fine.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but this past winter the heat would also only work when it wanted to. Sometimes it wouldn't blow hot air at all, sometimes it worked fine, and sometimes not at all.

The AC compressor cutting out is usually a sign of one of the pressure switches being triggered. Either low or high pressure. How much r134 was put in? Are there bubbles in the sight glass? What was the low side pressure?

I have this problem that compressor continually turns on and off (sometimes for longer periods). Seems that it is related to voltage fluctuations induced by a faulty alternator. Check if your voltage fluctuates or if you see flickering inside lights or headlights.

that heater thing sounds strange too, is the microfilter clogged?

Microfilter check is right on the money. If clogged, the airflow across the evaporator will be low which would allow it to approach freezing, this will trip off the compressor. Pressure switches as mentioned, it is very possible that the refrigerant pressure is too high causing a trip. Check aux fan operation, if it's dead, it can cause the refrigerant to run hot & overpressure the system.
