I have a '87 L6, just got her and beginning the restoration process. It's a black beauty with the dove gray leather interior. I've wanted one like this for a while and lucked into a pretty nice specimen at a good price.

However, there was some neglect and I do have some things to bring up to par. That's OK with me because I do enjoy the process. Overall the car seems to be in fine shape mechanically except for one thing. It stalls every now and then and the only pattern I have been able to discern is that it does it when decellerating. For example, after getting off the interstate it might stall at the bottom of the off-ramp. Usually sarts right back up. However, there have been a couple of occasions where it did not start right back up and I had to crank it for a while. Seems as though it wasn't getting gas.

Any suggestions from this fine forum would be highly appreciated by this 6er newbie.

Fuel, spark or air! Gotta be one of those things . . .

If you don't have a service history, its a good idea to start replacing normal wear and tear stuff like:

Distributor cap and rotor
Plugs
Air filter
Fuel filter

Also replace all the small vacuum hoses in the engine compartment and clean all the ground wire terminals and ground bolts. There should be a nest of ground wires on the fender next to the battery. There is also should be a bunch of ground wires toward the back of the valve cover. On these cars, the ground wires were all brown from the factory.

there is a very sensitive adjustment at the TPS(throttle position sensor),it's located on the throttle body and it should click every time the throttle plate returns home.

Thanks guys for the information. I think I will start with the plugs, vacuum hoses, ignition wires, cap and grounding items you mentioned. Is there an easy way to test the TPS?

Thanks again and I appreciate your patience with a newbie.

the audible test is to raise the hood, engine off and simply pull on the bracket that the throttle cable connects to,you should hear it click just before the rest position.it should click pulling from rest and again when returning.
