View Full Version : Who makes a good header for the 318?

I'm putting my engine into another car as the little sister wrecked mine. While I have the engine out I'd like to do a performance header since it would be so much easier now than when it's in the bay. So I did some searching, looked at a couple sites, but I'd like some input. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm also going to post in WTB so if anyone knows of a 4sale, hit me up please.

Thanks everyone.

Even if there was something out there, and I don't think there is, the gains it would yield on the 318 are minimal if not totally nonexistent. The top end and intake are the M42's weakness. Start there are do headers as a last resort.

i remember reading something a while ago saying that the pipe between the header and the cat (or something along those lines) has a noticeable restriction on the 318. any input on this?? i think if you change that out youll have a better gain and prolly a better sound too.

i was looking at stock 318 headers, they are nice, but there is definate room for improvement, im my case they will be a must,

Yeah if you're rebuilding the entire motor with the intent of getting power, headers might be a good idea. But they're definately not a good starting point IMO.

Man as I keep reading on BF.c and elsewhere it's seems like the m42 is really dogged. It sounds like everyone has written this engine off as pointless to modify, but I haven't been in many other stock 4bangers that cruise to 127mph like my car does. I guess these are just overlooked because of the availability of the 6. Maybe I'll end up keeping this engine stock, my mechanics son has an engine from a 92 535i that I could pick up for a couple hundred$. Maybe I'll see what I can do with that, and just use the m42 for a daily until that engine is good and tuned. Any thoughts?

And thanks for your input guys
