Speedo drops out

Really anoying problem with my 520i.

Just cruising alson and all of a sudden the spedo drops down to 0km/h. At first a tap on the dash and it would pop back. but now i just hit it and nothing happens, often being out of action for several minutes.

Wonder a few things, is this a common problem? (1983 520i) what could be the problem? and how much to fix? or could i do it my self?

A wire may be corroded, or your speed sensor might be loose. Check around your diff for a plug with a wire comming out of it. Try cleaning that plug up and putting it back.

But... if it was back there how come sometimes when i tap the dash it pops back up?
