Don't flame me for saying this (flame suit on just in case)....
that thing bears a VERY striking resemblance to the dubs...
golf GTI anyone??

The door looks weird, like it's not sitting flush....for some reason.

I'd be pretty upset if I was a dubs fan....

The front headlights remind me of a hyundai tiburon as well...

OH GOD NO!!!!!!!

Looks like a Civic hatch too... wtf is up with the front grill? Headlights are obviously covered up and it'll most likely look like the 3-series facelift. The door doesnt look flush.... something must be covered up there....... GOD DAMN BANGLE

HOW THE HELL CAN ANYONE APPROVE OF THESE AWFUL DESIGNS? I hope someone goes up to him and fires him.... or at least bashes everything he has done to his face so he resigns.... :bawl

Okay, here's my two cents. RWD hatchback= fun. Now, about the styling: there is pretty much only one way to design a hatchback, with 3 doors. It's hard to play upon that theme and create an entirely original design when there are about 100 other hatchbacks out there. The front grille is obviously fake, as it is not two kidneys, and that is THE BMW trademark. There are headlight covers and c-pillar covers as well as fake tail lights. Imagine this: a 2400 or 2500lb 180hp 6-speed RWD hatchback. Can you say fun? The design might not be timeless, but if BMW is expected to compete with Honda and VW it has to have very competitive interior space. Driving dynamics don't sell everything, you know. The styling, at least from the front, is distinctive and doesn't look like an econobox. I'm very partial towards this Bimmer, it may be my first new one.

BMW doesnt have to compete with Honda or VW.....

different cars, different class.

BMW should be focusing on getting back to what made a BMW a BMW... designing a car like the E30 or E36 when they ruled the track..

Bangle, i believe, is just ruining what could be a special time for BMW.... the 3,5,6,7 series of the 80s and 90's are vintage BMW engineering machines and their styles were awesome.... i dont see the new designs from BMW being a mainstay....and im just not EXCITED about where BMW is heading. the M3 is a benchmark for luxury sport coupes/sedans and i just feel they are straying away from what made a BMW a BMW.

Looks kinda big to be a hatchback. The car looks totally out of proportion.

So what will the ///M version gonna be called, ///M1??

You know if you look hard enough you can seen some e46-ness to it...I'd kind of like it to be a little more distinctly BMW too...but it's tough to say exactly what that is these days.

I don't think it looks bad -- you figure the grill will look nothing like the cammo front that's on there now.

Well, from what I understand that GRILL is the NEW makeover for the 3-series as well...so ... if you don't like it there, you might not like it on the 3-series.

See, the one series will have a 1.8? or is 1.6 liter 90 hp engine, BLECK...with the M-series having the 220 hp engine. Now, with the light weight, the M series might be fun to drive around. They'll be bringing those out in hatchback style, 4 door, and a normal 2-door I read under the 1-series...

BMW seems to be really shooting them selves in the foot here, the 6 series is some kind of Pontiac, this is the new Civic. Shit man, on top off all of that I dont like the new 7 series, and the new 5 does not look to promising either. Atleast the 3 series is nice, but wait, they will find a way to mess that up 2!

Where the hell are the traditional kidney grills??? The front looks like a freakin IS300

FrankW

can't anyone tell that is not going to be how it's going to look when it comes out? if the actual car will be something like those drawings of the 1-series i saw on motor trend mag, i like it.

true these were only spy pictures of it, and not the final design; but, I don't think they are going to go through MAJOR reworking of this design. Look at their time frame, for it to come out by next fall...they can't be tweakin' that much...

I guess they are going to be offering it in a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, a “sport wagon,” a coupe and a roadster. Wow, a plethora of choices to pick from....now how are they ALL going to look similar is what I'm wondering. A wagon that resembles a roadster???

Is that thing coming to the US? Small hatches are the rule in most of Europe. I have a hard time believing it will be sold here much less sell well...

If that man changes BMW's trademark grill, I will hunt him down and kill him.... why the hell isnt he fired already, its obvious that he cannot design for crap.

Oh one more thing, if anything, the new cars should have sharper lines, not this wavy headlight crap, something similar to the way audi changed the A4 design

uh, guys, this IS the return of the E30 formula. These will be light like the 3-series should be.

I personally don't like it, but as I read in "Reader's Letter" in last Roundel...it was talking about how some people (like us) are raging and raving about Bangle's designs. How we don't like them and despise them....but on the other hand, BMW hasn't seen any decrease in sales with the new designs out.

They're not goping to fire him for anything, as long as the cars keep on selling. And you know, that people will always buy a BMW, even if it looks like a Honda or a Hyondai (however it is spelled).

I guess we'll just have to get used to changes. Accept them or not, but there're always going to be buyers, as long as it says BMW somewhere on a surface.

Sad, but true

thats very true filip, but EVERYONE that reviews these cars has negative things to say about the design (remember those 7-series reviews? - "controversial" design), the interior is nice, the features are nice, the engines/power are nice, but just that exterior design... ugh

Wow, BMW is trying to be what everyone else doesn't want to...

Pontiac is trying to crawl out of their styling grave while BMW makes the ultimate Grand Am, the new 6er.

VW is aiming to move upmarket, BMW builds an (ugly) Golf.

Mercedes makes an effort to lose some weight and put a little more sport in their uber luxo-sedans and BMW grows a beer belly.

I hope that ain't the final product and is in disguise or something. The C Pillar is huge, bad for visibility, and the headlights resemble the old Integra... :(

wewu

Yeah the c-pillar doesn't look rite at all. Maybe they made it that way to throw everyone off as to the final look of the car.

wat are u trying to say? I personally think BMW's new design is pretty good. It's very revolutionary rather than evolutionary unlike many other brand. Mercedes made this revolutionary change a couple years back with the introduction of the E-class with the 4 bug-eye headlights. Remember what the review was like for that design, now almost all the MB models has either the inter-connected bug-eyes, or 4 individual bug-eyes.

I just saw the new Z4 with my own eyes yesterday, and that machine is absolutly stunning (other than the fender turning signal). the interior is well apointed, every control is easy within reach. the quality is definitely much better than the Z3.

I'm sorry, but that has got to be the absolute SEXIEST hatch i've ever seen :)

I dunno why, but the M Coupes just look a lot better than the Z3 coupe... there's just something about it, especially in that color... what is it? avus blue?

is a M coupe lower than the Z3 coupe?

i think i know the "something" your are talking about. The M coupe looks different because it has the license plate mount on the hatch rather than on the bumper and of course the M-coupe has 4 tail pipe. :)

the M-coupe should sit lower than the Z3-coupe.

That picture was taken off of BMW.de
I think the color is Estoril Blue; the color changes a lot when in different forms of lighting.
I don't if the M Coupe sits lower than the Z3 Coupe or not, but mine looks like it's ready for the WRC.

if the 1 series looks like that 1 CSR compact coupe that i have seen that gold picture of.... then hell yes I will buy one. If it looks like this POS..... the day they realise that.. is the day i write a very angry letter to BMW N/A complete with the thousands of other people that will be doing the same thing... asking " why in the hell are you kililng BMW's image??!!!??!!"
