I was driving back from Costco, when I look down at my odometer and noticed that the miles are not increasing anymore. I then looked at my trip meter, and obviously it isnt moving either. This just happened in the last 3 days. My speedometer and tachometer still work, its just the odometer which have failed. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Any suggestions would be great, thanks. I am hoping it is fairly simple...

One or more of the gears has failed. All the info you need is here:
http://www.odometergears.com/

You can also buy the gears from BavAuto. You'll have to remove the cluster (and probably steering wheel to get to it) and count the teeth on one the gears before you know which kit to order.

Sounds like a real curse. I hear its a very involved process to replace those gears, and it could take a couple of months.

Something similar happend to a guy in the 5 series forum. My advice was to just look at this as a blessing and keep driving like this until its time to sell your "low milage" car:devillook :lol

Your advice sucks. That can get you a serious fine and/or jail time.

Not if the car is over 10 years old, then the odometer is exempt.

Is that TX law or Federal? Knowing lovely California laws we're probably the only exception.

Those laws vary state by state. If you sell across state lines, it goes by the state the car was sold in.

And I know in Virginia, it must be noted, no matter the age of the car, that the odometer reading is incorrect and/or exceeds mechanical limits, lest the seller be fined and/or jailed.

In VA it's a class 1 misdemeanor, apparently. (http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-629) Same type of crime as reckless driving or DUI. At the bottom of the above link, you can see this law was updated just this year. I wonder why...

Go on ebay and buy a new cluster with a working speedo. Either remeber what miles were on each one and drive it, or roll the new one back/forward.

You dont have to take the steering wheel off, I have taken clusters out numerous times, never took the wheel off.

Call Jeff Caplan at odometer gears ltd. 757-593-3478. Let him know if you have a VDO or a Motometer cluster. Go ahead and order all 3 gears. After you have the cluster out PM me and I'll walk you through the process. It's not that difficult but i've discovered a few tips and tricks after fixing about 100 of these clusters. Tell Jeff that Mike from Honolulu referred you. He's a great guy and will help you any way he can.

Aloha,
Mike

I'll probablly have to give im a call too. My car has been sitting at 96,XXX for a few months, I really dont want to mess with taking out the cluster but I guess it's time to go for it since it's summer and I dont have school (which means I have a lot of free time).

If he doesn't roll it back and it isn't recorded on service records or legal documents no one knows. I dont believe in odometer tampering, just stating the obvious. In my state, the mileage is only recorded on title transfers.

When you go into a service station for an emissions/safety inspection or other service, it is reported to the state DMV (almost always for the inspection, and a lot of times for service, depending on the place).

mine took a crap, and i got it replaced, then they put a sticker in the door jam, that has the amount of miles that were on the car when it was replaced

I guess that pertains to the credibility of milage, but not how to replace it...sorry

The cluster will work but you'll have the low rpm tach and the likelyhood that the same problem will happen again. If you need help with the gear change PM me and I'll talk you through it.

$400.00! That seems quite expensive. I charge $150.00 to fix an E30 cluster. PM me and I'll help you with the gear change.

The gear sets from Jeff at www.odometergears.com run about $45.00 to $65.00 (VDO or Motometer) and are very good. Change all the gears while you have the cluster open. I speak from experience.
