Im buying parts form Pelican Parts to do a big tune up and in the water pump kit they're trying to sell me a fan clutch wrench and a counter holder? together they are like $75!

are they really necessary?

A proper fan clutch wrench is worthwhile. There's not much room between the clutch and the fan, so a garden variety wrench may not fit without grinding to make it thinner. The counter hold is nice to have and it makes the job a one person affair. But it usually isn't essential. I can usually loosen the fan nut by placing tension on the wrench (against the belt or using a long heavy screwdriver as a counter hold) and smacking it with a hand sledge. But that's hard to do with only two hands if the nut is being stuborn. Keep in mind that the nut has a left hand thread...

thanks for the help guys, my uncle's basically got a hardware store down in his basement. I'll poke around there before I'd buy anything else.

Yea i rigged something up with two big ass adjustable wrenches, and a big ass screw driver, to release the fan, that is prob the hardest part

good luck!

A 32 mm bicycle headwrench spanner )or some other thin spanner) is ideal for the fan clutch. The screw driver to counter the pulley works great to keep it from spinning.

I second the bike wrench. Local bike shop had it for $10, and it worked perfectly.
