The diag port is NOT done. The diag port knurled hold down knob is going to be replaced with a knurled billet piece like the rest of them. It will be complete on Thursday. All parts will be available in basic milled aluminum finish and clear coated. They will also be available in black annodized as well as custom annodized colors.
The radiator cap will also be a bit lower profile to match the oil cap.

hey jim, why not get the guy who you got the carbon engine dress up pieces to do a gb on those. cause i htink the billet pieces would look out of places without anything else to compliment them

I'm sure a group buy can be done. But recent marketing surveys done at my house where 10 out of 10 people try these on their car and ask "How much?" tells me that they look excellent on stock BMW engine covers. They even look good on E30s in Black annodized.
These pieces fit anything BMW has made back to 1988, best I can tell.

It will be awhile. Not forever, not next week. They are in design. The current source for them is not as smart about the technology as I had hoped. So I'm having the mechanical design done outside and will have them manufactured by my usual sources.
The good news is that this will allow me to hit a nice price point and adding them later will be the same price as buying a kit with them already included.
All future additions now are snap on. Woo-Hoo!

I had a piece made up today with the final milling surface defined. This is what they will look like as far as texture. Colors will be clear, black annodized or custom color. You must supply a color sample to me or trust me to read minds. Colors may also involve extra cost. It will absolutely be extra cost if you do not pre-purchase the parts. I can only beat up the coatings people when I'm holding major jingle in front of them for all of the pieces. You want to buy one in a month? It will probably be a $40 or more upcharge for custom coloration.
You may also request a smooth tooled surface for no extra charge. But again, be quick about it. Custom anything after the parts are built costs moola.

The price that I quoted privately to many of you was not completely correct.
The price is actually inclusive of any shipping charge.
I'm taking orders for this NOW.
billetwerks@umnitza.com for pre-order.
You can NOW make custom requests before the final milling as Jim stated above - so it will be a TRUE CUSTOM PIECE on YOUR car!
How about Engraving something for YOU? That's a custom charge but will give you the INDIVIDUAL BLING!!!
Jon Sibal - this means YOU:)

So nobody has any feedback on the finish?
Like or not?

I do like the machined finish Jim- Looks great- How easy will that surface be to clean- perhaps you should sell them with toothbrushes for cleaning!

That surface is only 3/1000's of an inch deep. You can barely feel it. Surface wipes right off.
My goal with it was to show the quality in the piece and the machining. In person it looks very bright and shining but on closer look you see the machining.
Here's the same piece from 12" in the full sun.
The machined pattern is awesome imo. If there was a variety with an ///M engraved, now that would be sweet.
umnitza
11-14-2002, 01:26 PM
that would be a custom order:)
You can place that now, billetwerks@umnitza.com and we can be sure to "include" it:)

I can machine anything as a custom order. I just can't produce it as a product with the Roundel or ///M emblem on it as a stock item. Copyrights and lawyers. Rightfully so.
Question: for the engravings, is it possible to do it so it winds up facing the right way (or close) when the cap is tightened down in the engine ... or is it just random?
Damn 2 more questions hit me ...
1) Is the engraving necessarily the same color as the rest of the piece?
2) Is it possible to have multiple colors (yea I'm thinking about the ///)?

Of course it will line up. You ARE dealing with me, aren't you?
My feelings are so hurt, you can't imagine it.

Lee,
It's only money. You can have the thing milled in a raised emblem if you want to pay for it. I'm a flexible guy (not like that you pervert) so tell me what you want and give me your credit card :)
jsp98m3

And yes, MULTIPLE colors are doable, More money......

the finish does look nice. anything too bright will push people away from it in my opinion cause it seems no one on this forum likeas anything too bling bling, like chrome rims.
umnitza, can u pm me a estimated price for these things. dont want no custom engraving.

Ohhh...I didn't realize you could do it in raised lettering... dang it, mmm....I sent Matt a picture of my engine bay. I trust your judgments, do what is easy and will make it look good. ^__^

Ok, just seeing what the possibilities are. Damn, raised ///M logo in ///M colors, on a steel gray metallic background ... that would be incredible.
I guess the general formula is: bling proportional to ca-ching.

It's only money boys. If you don't spend it on the car, some woman will just blow it on clothes.
Now for you Lee.... You have to let me loose on that engine bay. You planting beans on that thing? :)

I might have the cap. Otherwise I can pick one up at the dealer. You want me too?
Jim
If you're going that would be awesome -- it's one of the smaller ones by the intake manifold btw .

Ok troops.
Today was a busy day. Tomorrow the last piece gets turned out for approval. I had tehm do some rework on the radiator cap and final pics of that should be ready as well as the final piece of the Diagnostic Port cover.
So?
Well they are already busily turning out the blanks for the oil cap, the master brake cylinder cover and the top of the diag port.
That means that tomorrow is pull the trigger day on making the parts. It will not take long to make them and anyone that wants the pre-production special price needs to be making up their minds. Especially if you want to have any engraving or special color requests. Those orders need to be in hand by the end of next week.
What's the rush?
On the 23rd I am going on vacation for a week. The factory takes orders from no man except me. So if you haven't gotten your order in by the 23rd, you may miss pre-production pricing and I can guarantee your boat will have sailed on custom finishing, perhaps even special colors.
I don't want to strong arm you guys but production cycles are a fact of life and they aren't going to keep $70n per hour machines sitting around idle for us. So if you want in on the cheap pricing or special orders, hop to it.
There are no insider buddy ways for me to help you out once the lathes start humming.

So, do the pieces shown in Jim's car have the machining pattern?
jsp98m3
11-15-2002, 11:29 PM
Half do. The diag port and radiator cap have the pattern. The oil cap is a plain machined finish and the brake cap has been tumbled to remove machining marks. So there's a sample of everything but colors and engraving under the hood.
These are also only prototypes to check for fit and function. Production pieces will be much more spiffy.

Pricing is as follows:
$189 SHIPPED for all four
$55 Extra for Engraving
or
$100 for Embossed/Raised Lettering
$40 for different special colors
These are "limited" production, in that once the first 100 are gone, we may not make any more. Period. Tell your Significant Others this would be a great gift for you - engraved with your name/initials/whatever you like.
