In response to scary clattering noises that my 2002 M Roadster developed on Saturday afternoon it turns out that my engine is being replaced under warranty. I will be documenting the process and details on my web site at http://www.slacker.com/~nugget/mroadster/. I think it's valuable for those of us unfortunate enough to be hit by issues like this to compare notes, so here are mine.

My main frustration at this point is that I've missed a few teriffic top-down driving days. I didn't realize just how much I loved my car.

I give a lot of credit to BMW for taking the expensive responsibility for all the s54 cars with problems. My friends 02 M3 SMG was revving itself up and down repeatedly for a while and the engine would then cut out. Sometimes it would do it, sometimes it would be fine. The car was brought to the dealer 3 times, first the DME programming was reflashed, then the DME was replaced, and finally the injectors were replaced which seemed to fix the problem. Fortunately for him, the 3 problems in a short time period warranted him to get a BRAND NEW M3 under the NY lemon law. So now he is getting an 03 M3 6 speed. :buttrock

Nugget - Just curious... What is the production date for your car?

Thats the first M roadster I've heard of needing an engine replacement.

Is it the same bearing problem the 10-01- 02/02 M3s had?

Welcome to the club :)

Production date of 12/01/01 (right on target for troubles) and, yeah, it seems to be *exactly* the same problem the M3 folks are having with our shared S54 engine.

You are right. You are in the production date bracket with S54 problems. Hopefully everything will work out ok for you.

Mine is Jan 02 so I hope will not have any problems of this kind (knock on wood).

Good luck!
