Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a 93' 325is with 116K miles on it. The owner told me that 2nd gear will pop out, and he explained that the synchros are worn and need to be replaced; he said it would cost $200 to fix. I just called my BMW tech and he said to be very cautious because I may need a new tranny. So now I need a third opinion from you guys. Thanks.

umm... my tranny on my 325E ( 1984) is still running great. I had the same problem when i had my clutch problems about 100k back ( the car just broke 300k this weekend)..... so it shouldnt be tranny.

there was a warranty issue with a certain getrag gearbox that caused 2nd gear to pop out...this was fixed while cars were under warranty and can be done without too much trouble...

unfortunately i cant remember the gearbox model (same found in e36 m3) nor the price to fix...sorry

Actually, If i remember the thread about that issue, it was a manufacturing defect and is something that can't be fixed. Means you'd have to eventually change your transmission. Apparantley it starts out to just pop out of 2nd gear rarely.. and starts occuring more and more often until you can't put it in 2nd gear at all..

Search the forums for this thread... could be very informative.

EDIT:

Heres the thread:

Yeah I just posted this same topic yesterday. You have to replace the transmission, bummer.
