Hey All - First post here.

Im from Johannesburg South Africa and wondered if anyone from anywhere could shed some light on this subject for me.

I just got a 120i 58000km on the clock and my consumption in town driving in crazy, 13.5l/100km. Thats not driving hard, My old car a golf 4 GTI 110kw (150hp) driving hard would not ever be as heavy.

Anyone with some comments?

Bmw say the settings are normal..

Thanks.

It would be very early for it, but the O2 sensors could be on their way out.

thanks man, i'll suggest that to them. They're not too full of suggestions this side. they just plug their diag machine in and say all is sweet and thats it. Fuel is costing R6.26 a litre now. like 1c for you guys hehe. but madness for us.

Anyway cool.

Other possibilities that come to mind concern the fuel pump and the injectors. If the fuel pressure is too high, the injectors will squirt more gas than normal, which increases consumption without added power as the valves still open like the original amount of gas was used. The injectors could also be stuck, which would be pretty rare.

Gas here is about 3$/gal. I remember a few years ago, it was 99 cents. Ugh. At least i have learned to drive my 540 so I get 20+ mpg. :)

Hm... now you have me thinking on other causes, too...

If the fuel system is functioning corrently, then it is a signal to the DME which would cause it to run ultra rich. Normally, this is the O2 sensors, but there could be other factors, like your MAF or Throttle Position Sensor. Both of those can cause excess fuel consumption and/or power issues, without throwing any codes.

i am going to print this thread out and show em, my compression is great, all in the 9's... look the car feels sluggish to me comapred to my old car a chipped golf 4 gti... but it goes ok.. so i dunno

do the old school test, see how much gas your car drinks on 100km... i never trusted the fuel consumption indicator

Man. That is NOT right if you say you're driving normally.
The 130i in our garage ws running slightly high through break in, but now with approx 4,000km on the clock it is getting under 12.9L/100km. The reading is slowly going down - so it is probably getting less than that I just have no idea exactly what. I know I could just reset it but I don't want to - lol.

Buy a diesel:))) I got my 320d 150hp down to 5l/100km. But on avarege it burns around 6,5l.

Thanks guys, Im almost ready to get rid of this car, had it only a month. I can hardly drive it. Today its sitting on 13.8l/100.
Taiheung - Thats what I would think, a 130i driven hard should return this consumption, I mean even if i killed this little engine everyday its whole life it should never dream of returning figures if 13.8l/100, its insane....

Siki-I wish i could have got 120d but it was out of my price range, I should have realised what I spent in 1 months petrol I would have saved on the purchase price... haha... H E L P!!!!

What is the computer telling you when you're on the highway?

Mossman

It says 12.2l/100km driving in town only...

really driving normally hey.

I think its incredably heavy for such a slow car.

Anyway what can be done.

Today put in 6 litres and am driving not going over 3000rpm and seeing what happens.

Pathetic.

It's interesting. Maybe the 2.0L just struggles a bit too much? The 130i is now returning mileage figures of sub 12L/100km on spirited driving! The fuel economy from such a sporty car is great!
