There is a post from JCFox on the bimmer.org E38 forum about a DIY fix for this problem. This si the first time that anyone claims to have DIY fixed this issue, which si common for the E39/38s. The normal resolution has been to replace the HVAC panel complete, the LCD panel is not available seperately.
