THere is a circlip connected to the shift rod on the bottom of the shift lever that you need to remove and then you will be able to remove it.

what part are you talking about? the white scoket that the ball on the shift lever snaps into? if that is what you're trying to remove, you need to flat head screwdrivers, cross them and pry.. eh why ami i typing this, here's a link.. http://www.understeer.com/shiftlever.shtml

I'm trying to get the bar that the ball of the lever sits in. it is attached at the top of the transmission with a pin of some sort and the other sits in a bracket just passed the shift lever. it is a bar with a cirlce opening in the middle for the shift lever to sit in and basically creates a pivot point for the shift lever itself. its on page 230-1 of the BMW service manual made by Bentley publishing. its labeled part #8.

NIGHTCRAWLER......thanks for the link....it covers what i was doing and in good detail, but that was the fairly easy part. the part that came loose and i cant get back in is in the the 1st picture in the 3rd row of your link. its in several other pics but that was the first one i saw. it somehow came out of the bracket at the aft end of it. do you have a link on how to ge that back in?
