So I got my S/C kit the other day and I am going to install it this weekend, but I was told I need to align my EWS after swapping in the new ECU.
My questions are:
What is an EWS?
What does it need to be aligned
Who can align it?
How much am I looking at spending?
I am very close to Pacific BMW as well as some other reputable indy shops. I would rather not take it to a dealer though.
TIA

EWS is the anti-theft system used by BMW. It uses a chip in the key that must match the code for that cars computer. Otherwise the car will not run or start. You have to take the computer and new computer to the dealer. I think you need to swap computer and than they realign it in the car. They usually charge an hour of labor but I have heard of people getting it for 1/2 hour.

There might be a way but why? That was put in the car for a reason. Seems stupid to spend that much money on a car and s/c and than bitch about an hour of labor.

you're right, I just want to be able to drive the car right away and I won't be able to get it re-aligned till monday. It isn't about the money as much as it is about me wanting to feel the boost on Sunday.

I've also heard of people cutting the EWS input wire in their engine bays. I had to do this on my car when I get a new burned chip from AA. I'm not sure how it'll work on your car though.

Only the dealer can align the EWS. It takes about 3 minutes. Don't let them try to talk you into reprogramming the VIN within the DME. If they reprogram the VIN, you will lose the modified program.
