so i bought an 86 csi, fixed the rust, lol, who knew, sunroof drains too, painting it, original paint thanks to this site. good info here,, did the steering bracket with a long bolt quick fix after two welds failed. next is driver window off track, then exhaust. thinking about chip but have to do my homework. this is the best handling car i ever drove. a/c compressor hopefully before summer. so the question is do i need a special tool to adjust valves,, manual is not clear, certified beemer mechanic next door says yes..

Congrats on the 2nd most beautiful BMW ever built (3.0 CS/CSi coupes being the first).

You do not need a special tool for valve adjustments, a right angle hex wrench that fits the adjustment cam hole will work. You can buy a "spring-loaded" tool but honestly, I have used a piece of coat hanger. This isn't brain surgery.

This is a process that requires some learning and patience on your part.

First, make certain the motor is overnight cold.

Second, make sure you can turn the crank over manually, you may want to pull the spark plugs to make this easier.

Third, work in firing order and make sure you get the camshaft in the right position before measuring and adjusting. Remember too loose is better than too tight, but you own a six, so you're a perfectionist now, you have to have it just right!!

Fourth, once you're done, go thru the valves a second time to verify your work. Don't over tighten the cam locking nuts!!

Finally, Check the two banjo bolts that hold the oiler bar above the valve train. They should not be loose. If so, get the updated BMW versions with locktite on the threads.

Good Luck and enjoy a very classy ride,

Well, shucks, now I'll have to find an E24 to round out my top 3. :stickoutt

As for the chip, I'd go with Conforti. I have it on my 540; it made an impact, and actually increased my gas mileage about 10-20%. A very good mod overall.

Although, with M30s, the chip will make it so you should run only premium, rather than mid or regular like the normal M30.
