View Full Version : Cracked the oil pan
:Sigh: :mad
I was going fishin the other day, and pulled into the bail shop...of course I obviously forgot you have to have a monster truck to survive that fucking lot, so yea...huge pothole...more like a crater...whole front end drops..boom...nice lil hole in the oil pan...of course I didnt even notice til a day later when I'm running on low oil...eh...I guess it only lost about a quart.
Anyway, I checked BavAuto...it said like $250 bucks for just the oil pan on it (1989 325i)...I didnt even see a listing for the oil pan gasket?
Bah, so my question is, suppose I find this oil pan gasket and get the oil pan...is it a sinch to do this myself? Also, what would I torque the bolts back on to?
And, if anyone knows a cheaper price on these...please lemme know.

Its easy to do....
Oil pan gaskets are abot 9 bucks from bav....
The oil pan bolts need to be torqued to 7-8 ft. lbs.
steering rack bolts torqued to 31 ft. lbs.
Theres probably a writeup somewhere on how to do this properly if you dont have a bently.
Thanks, I probably wont have time to do this until the weekend, so if anyone else has anything to say...please do so while I still havent done anything.

Check with www.theeurodepot.com. You might be able to get a used pan cheaper from them.

Mine wasnt messy at all....
If your car is driveable i would take it to your local quarter car wash and wash all underneath the engine and the area where youll be working.

To remove the oilpan you must remove the oilpump. I jacked my engine up a little bit to get some more space between the oilpan and the front subframe. It is not very difficult but to get the oilpump off can be tricky.
Take the pan to a welder. I have welded 2 oilpans with good result

i am in a similiar situation as you, i had a busted oil pan, so i went shopping. i checked out bavauto, but i found cheaper on ebay. $180 for the pan, gasket, free shipping. unfortunately the pan is still sitting in my living room waiting to be installed because i dont think i have enough experience/confidence to tackle this alone...

Next investment after oil pan install should be a skid plate.

E30 skidplates
The oil pan in an E30 is rather unprotected against road hazards from the factory. The
risk of cracking an oil pan becomes a reality when lowering the car or participating in
motorsports where off-road "excursions" can occur. Made from 1/8" aluminum, these
skidplates offer lightweight protection against road hazards. By offering full coverage of
the oil pan, skidplates can save you both time and money....perhaps even your engine.
Mounts to the factory steering rack bolts in the rear and with heavy duty self-tapping
fasteners in the front.

I'm in the process of replacing my pan as we speak. I'd say just go ahead and jack the motor up alil just to make everything go alil smoother. And yes some of the bolts are a bitch to get to.

it is a big pain... the motor has to be lifted a bit to get the pan to clear the oil pump... not that messy though

I gotta second the replies about it being a bitch to get to some om the bolts. I went and bought some ratchet wrenches to help it go a bit faster. If you have an auto the rear cover bolts for the tranny are a tiny inverted Torx, but you can use a 7mm to get them off :paranoid:
