I had to ship some rims a while ago. I got 2 custom boxes made at a packaging store and shipped two wheels per box. It gets really expensive though.

you can get the boxes, usually for free, from a computer store. the boxes tend to be ones that were meant for large monitors, and will probably fit your 18 inch rims, and just make sure you have lots of padding in there. it'll be pretty heavy though, so expect a pretty costly shipping charge.
or, you could go to the custom box stores and purchase a box, but i've found that just buying the box could cost you quite a bit as well.
I wrap each wheel in cardboard 20inch circles. Put some bubble wrap on the face of the wheel, then put two cut circles on the front and two on the back. You can tape these on , or I plastic wrap the hole wheel and tape the ends.
I never had a problem, and they are wrapped better then tirerack.

Hey man, i am going to ship some 19's and i have called a local wheel shop and they are giving me the boxes for free. then i have to get some bubble rap and it is going to cost almost $30 a wheel to ship. Oh well, i want to make sure they get there like i send it out.
I did mine myself. I cut out squares that were the same dia. of the wheel itself, 2 per side, and then taped the whole thing up crazy! Fold the edges over the wheel and it provides really good protection. No way the cardboard could come loose... didn't take me long, and just stole a bunch of big boxes from work for the cardboard.
What carrier did you guys use(FEDEX, UPS)??
