I was down in the U.S. yesterday and on gas stations i saw they were selling radar detectors. they ranged from $60-180 U.s dollars. Some of them had 360 degrees scanning, some had 10 band? 4 laser, 4 radar, and 2 something else.

I am thinking of buying one so if anybody has any info or can explain any disadvangaqes or advantages and what i should be looking for. (Are the same radar guns used in canada as in the u.s ?) thanks.

Passport 8500's are very nice. Mine has saved me many times.

As said before, anything Escort or the V1 is good.

FYI: I think radar detectors are illegal in Toronto. Check out the Valentine 1 website:

Aren't radar detectors illegal in a lot of places?
- T.G., Virginia

You still have the right to know when you're under radar surveillance almost everywhere in the US. The exceptions are Virginia, which bans detector use, and nearby Washington, D.C., which bans possession. Canada is much less friendly toward civil liberties. Detectors are banned everywhere except British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

If you decide to break the law, go with the Valentine 1. :buttrock

Jim P makes a rear-view mirror for the V1's remote display. You can then tuck the detectector somewhere a little less obvious. See his website... Apexcone.com

When you tuck it less obvious, does it need to "see" out of a window? Or could you put it in the trunk?

Illegal to own, and use in Ontario. Use only in USA.

Hold on for a while (hopefully no too long) while Beltronics comes out with a new line that is not detectable by the Spectrum (new radar detector detector used by OPP). All radar detectors now are detectable.

Beltronics is in Mississauga - won't sell you one if you live in Ontario, but you can always pop over to NY and get it there. Get the portable cordelss types - do NOT buy one with cords - dead give-away to coppers in case you forget to remove it while in Ontario.

Beltronics makes excellent detectors - I prefer it over V1 which everyone is raving about (V1 has too many falses, and is easily detectable - has limited range for some frequency bands).

Radar systems/bands/frequencies are identical for both countries
