View Full Version : Crank Pulley and 3.5" TB Boot, worth it?

With the power modifications that I have listed below, would the 3.5" ASC silicone boot & uri crank pulley give me good hp for the money?
Other than welding the OPN, should I take any other precautions when it comes to the crank pulley? Does hot weather have any effect on the parts being under driven by the pulley? Any advice or clarification is greatly appreciated.
So my pwer mods are:
Dinan SW St. 5, Dinan Tranny Chip St. 4, Cosmos CAI, 3.5 HFM, Dinan BBTB, M50 Manifold, 3.91LSD, Dinan Exhaust
bottom line, are these two mods worth the money when considering what I have on the car?
Thanks,
Sergei

*cough* tranni swap *cough*
;)
I was wondering the same thing about the TB boot. I wouldn't go with the crank pulley though. If these engines have a harmonic balancer...I would NEVER, EVER remove it. Get the a/c, p/s, alt pulleys done instead.

I've got a crank pulley it's definately worth it and properly installed (correct torque and locktite) I have never seen any problems with it. I've seen many guys bashing them on our forums, but I bet you won't find one instance where someone can actually prove that the crank pulley messed up their motor. The power gains are pretty decent, much better than accesory pulleys, I think it's around 8-10 whp and you can feel a difference beginning from midrange RPMs.
In your situation it looks like you could also pick up a few extra hp from the samco hose 2 since you've got the bigger intake, HFM and TB so the ASC tb (if you still have one) and 3" TB hose seem to be a bottleneck.
I'm with the guy who said tranny swap...:D

The crank pulley should cause engine damage in the long run. Remember, the harmonic balancer keeps the crankshaft and bottom end from self destructing over the long haul. It counters all the small but dangerous vibrations in the engine. It probably won't damage the engine short term, but there's a real good reason for it being there. the extra 4hp over the accesory pulleys isn't worth losing the peace of mind knowing that your crank and rods are not a ticking time bomb. IMHO

oh no, another crank pulley debate.......many, many people use the crank pulley, not one person so far has listed an engine related problem with it. I had one for almost 2 years, my only problem was the bolts sheared off that held the timing ring to the pulley (95's)....twice. I currently do not have one on the car because it is not legal in my future class.

thanks for the info guys.
i was a click away from buying the partss for the swap last summer. aa ssk, m5 clutch, etc...
but realized that such a large investment on a ten year old car is unwise

I personally would never use an aluminum replacement crank pulley. It's absolutely worth the extra cost to get a pulley set that retains the stock damper.
A friend's 3kGT VR-4 sheared the crank with 47k miles - While he was cruising down the highway... as a direct result of having an aluminum pulley. Harmonic dampers aren't there just to slow the engine down or add drag.
