Personally I would like to see a rear mount vtg turbo!
Captain
06-01-2006, 01:47 PM
They also mentioned a rear mount turbo in an upcoming project so stay tuned, and there is another company working on a post cat turbo system for the "3 series" although they did not specify which chasis.

That would be good for Armo95. Space is tight for twins on the V8 but a rear mount would still spool fine due to all that exhaust gas and not having to build new manifolds plus being smog legal after cat would be a win win win fttw(for teh triple win). :buttrock

My buddy was going to buy rear mount twin turbo to through on his C5 Z06. Pretty impressive numbers. The company that is behind all of this is STS (http://www.ststurbo.com). He told them about my M3 and they said they developed a kit for it and someone in the North West (Oregon area) put in a large order for a group of guys. I don't plan on getting one or any FI in the next couple months at all ($$) but might be an attractive option for some especially in California.

Alright! That's it! Who is doing your welding? What the hell? Now you have a tuner that tunes Motec, Haltec, Tec, possibly Autronic, EFI and more plus you have a TIG welder now that makes beautiful pieces of art manifolds and other pretty piping welds?:eyecrazy Are you working on a monopoly or what? :nono :lol :redspot
Next thing you'll be doing is your own custom tranny adapter plates, custom engine mounts, custom oil pumps and custom oil pans so that you can mount the engines vertically to fit GT47-88 turbos on top like the Supras! :rolleyes :D

WTF is a VTG turbo??? (A BIG one???)
Variable Turbine Geometry, as found on the new 997tt. It is the ability of the turbine fins to change according to exhaust flow: providing both a solid low end, while altering the fin geometry for high-end flow. (the best of both worlds :buttrock )

the gist of my p.m. was explaining how vtg turbos as found on most diesels (holsets for cummins and gt37's for super duty fords) arent suitable for gasoline engines due to the higher egt's found with gasoline. (the new porsche 997tt uses new borg warner turbo's that utilize special high temp ceramics that make the turbo able to withstand higher temperatures.
The benefit to the rear mount vtg is that (according to STS) rearmount turbos see about 500 degree lower egt's thus making a vtg mounted in the rear a perfect fit for a gasoline engine. These turbo's can be found relatively cheap and are capable of BIG power. The vtg will take care of spooling it, theoretically it should make full boost before 2k rpm's
