I have one from a 97 M3 sedan. $160 shipped to Baltimore.

When you change clusters, how do you get it to read your correct mileage? I have some dark spots on my '98M 3/4 and was thinking of putting in a new one, but didn't know about the mileage issue.

There is a coding plug in the back that retains the mileage. I am told you just unplug it from your old one and swap it over. Haven't swapped one over before but I have had my cluster out. I will have to let you know.

I have had mine out too. I asked someone else this same question and he said it did not retain the mileage. He said he swapped his and read the mileage from the car he took it out of. Let me know what happens with yours.

you can't really force feed programming from one coded cluster into another car, if you ever have to program another part of the car you will not be able to due to the cluster thinking it belongs to another car. Typically dealerships have to do the programming in order for the mileage to be correct. Other places can program modules in the car but not clusters... specifically for E36's

So, you can replace it, but need the dealer to do it so everything will be ok on the programming and in the future if you need anything reprogrammed it will be OK ?

Correct, i had a 95 M3 that i had to buy a new gauge cluster because i could not code my new DME, the cluster is the "gateway" for programming in the car (regardless of year BMW). Occasionally with a new dme you have to replace the EWS module. but with a cluster it should be plug in and program, plus if it is done right you done have to worry about having a "not actual mileage" vehicle and needing to use a mileage correctin sticker
