View Full Version : Am I crazy--Another 6????

story is-son has been driving his 1st BMW(90 525)for a little over a month now.he constantly tells me i should trade my 6 for his 5.of course i say no,forget about it,now go away.
he may have found someone else to make the trade with.
now the delima,he wants a 5sp car and the one he's thinking about is an automatic with comfort seats.but it is supposedly rust free(california car).the only way i would get rid of my 6 is for a rust free example.we have not inspected the car and will have to drive a few hours to see it.
even though i've spent much time and energy on my 6(not even close to being completed),i told my son there is the possibility i may trade him my 6 for his if it is truely rust free.then i'm stuck with an automatic and comfort seats and the process starts all over again.but i feel rust free is the most important part of any 6,the rest can be taken care of with a little more time and $$$.
am i crazy to start a new project(due to my injury, don't know if i want to start over)? The car in question is represented as not needing much-needs control arms, seats redone and AC charged.we all know there is always much more lurking on any car.but it did make the 1,800 mile drive from Cailfornia event free and many newly replaced parts in preparation for the drive and the fact it is now his daughters and she doesn't like it.wants the 5.
thoughts anyone?

the car is in Miss.,outside of Memphis.driven out of California in Feb of this year.wasn't advertised for sale.just talking with someone that my son wanted to trade his 5 for a 6.and it has gone on from there.may meet in Nashville(1/2 way)this coming monday for him to check the 5 and us to check the 6.will be a straight up trade with him keeping the wheels.swapping titles in a parking lot,how ballsy is that?

Got to make sure that everything checks out. I kind of cringed when you said you were going to trade titles in the lot. Perhaps go to a notary if its all going to go down. Having 2 6ers isnt going to be a bad thing though. How well is that 5 running for your son anyway? It is definitely worth the drive though, id say, if hes going to meet you half way. Good luck with it dave.

i appreciate your concern.believe me,it sounds very risky.I have called the clerks office here to find out exactly what i need for proper transfer with the car brought back/traded for.
I have emailed the other party indicating exactly what i need(including filling out an affidavit in front of a notary),and if he's not comfortable doing that,it won't happen.
i have also asked him to check with the DMV in his state to find out what he needs.
he is a regular on another forum and we have talked once.if i suspect a problem,it's easy,i just drive back home.already been burned before by 1 jerk.won't happen again. It's terrible that i have to put an honest through this type of scrutiny.but this type of tranaction needs to be followed precisely.

Dave,
You are doing the right thing. Make sure all is good. I would also suggest you take the car to a local place with a hose to run water over it to see if there are any leaks... Leaks you cannot afford to trade the 5 for...

very correct there Gman.I want no leaks at all.On the way to SESF,i hit rain most of the way there and found i have a leak that drips down both kick panels.i hit very heavy rain and the front carpet got pretty wet as the miles clicked away.i suspect the windshield gasket.i have already sealed the normal culprits.
while at home my 6 resides in the garage,if it's raining or wet,i take the other car.

Check it out and if it all checks out, let your son deal with the leaks and rust, and you shouldn't have a hard time ripping that auto out and swapping in another 5 speed!

Are you crazy??? Only in a sick sort of way!!! As said, let your son do the dealing. It is his turn to go through all the crap. It should be HIS adventure (you are still working on yours). Nothing says you can't take the advisory position on this one!!

we haven't gone to see the car yet, probably monday if we do.
the only i will do the wrenching on it is if it truely ends up being rust free and my son wants mine.i will advise him and assist with any repair needed.on those fragile bolts and things that snap and need an experienced hand,i may take over while showing him how to do it.
we are only going to look at the car.if it's not what he wants,it wont happen.if he does want it,he will driving it home and we'll have 2 in the driveway.
mine is a 5sp with sports(things son want's),i could live with an auto and flat seats for a while.good body is 1st on my list with a 6er's condition.the rest is bolt on stuff.

You've a very nice car there and alot of work has gone into it to get to that condition - but you have always mentioned you would be interested in a rust free example - so now's your chance/opportunity.
It really sounds like a win win situation, let your son deal/exchange with the new one and his 5 series (as Bill says, let him have all the hassle).
Then you can take your time to examine his 6 - and if you think it's a good move make the change. It's not as if it's going to another home and you can have fun upgrading/swapping/trading bits between the 2 over the years, plus the diagnostic advantages of having 2 working vehicles are massive.
GOOD LUCK

he did make the trade.the car(body) is in great shape rust wise.I haven't examined it closly, but looking in the rear fender wells is as clean as it gets.
you're right about having 2 of the same car, makes troubleshooting much easier.as my sig indicates, the wife and i also have 960's.the drive now has 2 960's and 2 86,635's.
don't know how interested the son is about a trade yet,i just mentioned that i may be interested and i'll let him think about it.of course it already has it's issues, but rust is the #1 enemy of these cars.what he doesn't like about the one he traded his 5er for is the comfort seats and it's an automatic.
