Get Hella's with the black housing.

Get whatever you want from where-ever you want. Its all the same crap, the only difference in any of the stuff is really in the quality of the headlight housings themselves.

Umnitza makes good stuff. Their parts are quality, and when everything works you will be very happy. If something doesn't work, or breaks in transit, you could be in for a huge hassle.
Understeer's products are equally good, and they seem to have fewer complaints from customers.
Check the Vendor section...

the projectros are different in ZKW's, Hella's, Depo's and DJ Auto's. ZKW supposedly has the best projectors...

now with the new depos zkw are no longer worth the extra money. Yes zkw are better but not enough to justify the extra money anymore do to the gen IV's. This comming from people at umnitza.

Check the Vendor section...Actually. For straight halogen use the Hell Free form European headlights outrank all of the above. For HID use the hella Celis is the best optically. The ZKW's are significantly better than both the DEPO's and the DJ autos. I've never seen a set of Hella projectors in person. I've always heard they were better but harder to get, cost more, and don't have as attractive of a projector mounting assembly.
If you are really concerned with optics do a D2S retrofit from a car with small projectors, or a D1S (the corvette has pretty small projectors hence me thinking D1S).
DJ auto the dispersal is more forward than the depo/zkw/hella. The plastics are about equal to depo. They look very close to ZKW from the outside. The insides.....permissible, but definitely not top quality. If I wasn't planning a full chop job with bixenons x 4 sometime in the next year I'd get ZKW's. I meant, DDE's, venders, HID's, etc. are all pretty much the same stuff. Chris is an outstanding guy and has given me more advice than I can handle, and I've never even been able to buy something from him. He simply doesn't have a kit/product that I want at the moment and it makes me feel bad. Umnitza, haven't dealt with. Ebay seems to be hit or miss.
FWIW though with the headlights. If you get HID's the headlight buckets you get really makes a nominal difference. for me more forward throw is desireable (can aim farther ahead).
Just expect to have to take them apart at some point if you get angel eyes. Something always goes wrong.

Okay.. Now I'm really confused. Hella "free form"? I thought free-form headlights were the change that replaced elipsoids on US spec cars.
Slightly "hot" halogens can certainly throw an acceptable beam.. Is there actually an available "free form" headlight upgrade that will result in better lighting (using halogen bulbs) without the expense of upgrading to true HID?

Is there actually an available "free form" headlight upgrade that will result in better lighting (using halogen bulbs) without the expense of upgrading to true HID?I looked for a long time, couldn't find anything. Decided that I was better off getting a Taiwanese brand of projectors and a set of HID's than spending the same and staying halogen.
Free form doesn't mean better or worse in terms of aiming, but it does mean better in efficiency of light put to the road (in most cases). A free form headlight is one that has a reflector and sometimes a widening lense. Most new cars have free form halogens because most of the bulbs output makes it to the road. The reflector can be sectionalized for optimum throw, and thus most fo the light makes it to the road.
On a projector there is a cutoff shield that blocks about 40% to 50% of the light from ever making it to the front lense.
My understanding is there were the "aweful" US spec free forms, and an awesome Euro spec free form that came out in late production models. I haven't been able to find any of these lights, but have found a fair amount of E36 headlight info saying they exist. I want to say an article in the roundel had some good info on it.
Get HID's and projectors though. Angel eyes are just icing on the cake. I'd rather be able to see at night than look cool and not. Plus angel eyes are really not that hard to add later.

hey i was wondering what ks are theses? there hotBoth appear to be aimed too high. The lights should be ~3" down at 25'. Those appear level or higher. Great for you...sucky for everyone else.

I definitely like the AE lights on the Hellas at night better than the ZKW's. Just my personal preference. LuvMy328: did you start out with the H7 halogens in your Hella's? Huge difference with the Xenon or no?

I love my depos, however when I tried to aim them the aiming thing broke I think, because now they are stuck spotlighting UFO's. Does anyone know if you can open them up and aim them a different way?

Halogen was only used for aiming, looked very good actually. HID = WOW, even better. Great optics, not as wide as DEPO, but much more "usable" light. My previous lights were DEPO H7 with HID and I felt the pattern was wider than necessary. The HELLA's are a bit narrower and provide a better illuminated area. I got a good price on them, when I say "good" i mean better than ussual, not cheap lol

I love my depos, however when I tried to aim them the aiming thing broke I think, because now they are stuck spotlighting UFO's. Does anyone know if you can open them up and aim them a different way? That exact thing happened on my depo's when I had them. Its the stupid clip design. Whatever, I had to grind away part of the DJ auto projector itself just to get it to aim correctly (was hitting the housing). Took 45 minutes from the time I took the headlight apart to the time it was back together (already had them apart before for DDE's).
Where did you buy your lights from? If there is some kind of warranty on them see about getting new ones first....and you pay no shipping costs on that. If it starts costing you money, look for some DDE DIY's - getting to the aiming mechanism is much the same. The projector should be held in by 3 screws if you need to remove that too.
PM me if you want some more help. I'll be in orlando some this weekend.

Do you have Umnitza angels on yours?? If so, how much did it cost to ship them to the UK?
