Hey, those of you who have that prob where the car jerks and hesitates about 3,500 RPM or so? (might be higher/lower on yours, but generally the same symptom - under load the engine misfires and skips...) Go to a shop and ask them to see what codes you have.. even if no CEL is on.. Then ask them to re-set it, drive around the block and check the codes again - if they vary - YOU HAVE A PROB W/DME!!!!!!
Now, dont freak out.. you can fix these.. in most cases...lol
http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36-DME-Repair/E36-DME-Repair.htm

Check that link out..
I had the hesitation/power loss on mine.. 3500 RPM.. tried the coils,plugs,etc.. No CEL on.. cant barely accelerate though hahaha..
Shop pulled the codes, said cyl 1,5 & 6 are missing.
Reset it, drove around the block, checked again - now cyl 1,3,4 are missing.. WTF, right? Well its the DME!!!!!
1.Take it out, (DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!!!!!!)
2.Take it apart, ( T-20 screwdriver), and take a HARD look at all the solder spots and contacts.. any green or tan residue is your problem..
3.I used rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush to get it all off, that way ur not messing with a rag that catches on everything..
4.The alcohol will leave a residue, so use a second brush thats dry and clean.. Just go over it all again, and the film comes off..
Now, go buy some SILICONE.. I used the spray.. That way you prevent the moisture from getting in there even if it rains really hard.. it might be on the DME, but the board will be dry :) Spray it lightly..
5.Now put it back together, plug it in, connect the battery, and love your car again!!!!!
Email me if you need any help..

Oh, After You Clean It With The Brushes, Take A Hair Dryer, And Dry Both Sides, About 3-4 Mins Per Side.. Carefull, Its Gonna Be Hot After, But Gets Rid Of Any Moisture That Might Have Been Under The Stuff U Brushed Off (which Is Why That Stuff Got There- Moisture). Then Spray The Silicone.

Did you post this in the "Hesitation" thread?

Bump for others to read - could solve some peples problems where nothing else has worked.

And while you're in there, look closely for any solder connections that may have wiggled loose or cracked. Usually, these can be fixed with a simple soldering iron. Just heat the connection long enough to re-flow it. Additonal solder is not needed.

Don't mean to be a killjoy here - but how long have you given it? By pulling the DME, you've set it into adaptation mode, so it's going to feel a lot different when you first start driving it. After a week or so of driving, the DME will be adapated, and it may well go back to normal....

Is this the slight hesitation/skip you feel for a split second when accelerating? If so I have that problem, but it says on cars prior to '94 I have a '99...

I might be being really stupid here, but is the DME the same asd the ECU?

im surprised this solved the issue, this is a common concern for all m50/m52 engines weather obd1 or 2, i found the fault being spark intensity. replaced my 4 electrode plugs with cheap ngk single electrodes gapped to .0055 and havent had a prob since...
