View Full Version : Power loss in the years.

Hello all this is my first forum post so be gentle. I have a 1993 325is with 156k on it and I was just wondering how much of a difference in power it has from when it was brand new. I have seen the specs for it online but I am assuming those were taken when the car was in primo condition with low if not zero miles on the engine.
The reason I am asking is for two reasons
1.) I am just curious
2.) I want to take it to the 1/4 mile track but I am not sure who I should race.
My friend has a new RSX type S that is really quick and he wants to race but I think I will be owned. His car is stock and his shifts are slow but my car seems to be not as fast as it used to be. I only have a K&N intake kit, generic headers and exhaust (not sure what kind but can't be cheap sounds great).
P.S. I know you guys are going to say get it dyno-ed but I am not going to do that for a little while and I was curious now.

Just race your friend. Even if he wins, so what? You get experience at the track, and you get a timeslip to give you a reference for the future.

excatly and you should be able to take him in the 1/4 and if not you will own him in the corners

haha... i haven't seen this in a while ...YOU'LL OWN HIM IN THE TWISTIES...
i agree with guy above.. just race and see where your car stands..what's the point of racing only slower cars

i didnt know how to spell "twisties" so i decided to be lazy and type corners.
As long as the engine hasn't been abused it shouldn't make too much of a difference...

Agreed. Not much, but any engine will likely lose anywhere from 3-8 whp with rings getting worn, old valve seals and guides, and other things by that age... mostly stuff that will affect compression. But like everyone else has said, just go run and find out.

Aren't there some formulas to figure out HP based on 1/4 mile time? Or is it the other way around...I swear I've seen this somewhere.

For reference...
My 1989 N/A Supra when new dyon'ed 184rwhp, then 185rwhp at 215,000 miles.
My 1987 N/A RX7 dyno'ed 122rwhp when new, then 121rwhp with 121,000 miles and a seal failing.
My 1996 328i with 170,000 miles and a K&N recently dyno'ed 167rwhp.
My TL1000S when new dyno'ed 117rwhp, now dyno'ed on base map 122rwhp (127rwhp with tweaking)
Mileage really has little effect...and almost ZERO effect in comparison to general engine health.

With 199,000 my engine has higher than normal compression due to the carbon build up and continued use of high quality synthetic oil :)

well drive it harder so carbon doesn't get a chance to build up!!

Redline often for a squeaky clean motor :)

Thanks guys. I thought it made a lot bigger difference with engine wear with high mileage. I guess I was wrong. I was going to race him either way but now I got a little bit more confidence that the quarter mile is mine.

ha we are on the same boat i have 201k on mine and i dont know if its all the carbon build up causing the high compression over the years but it runs really strong.
and man race that type S from a standstill its fwd with no lsd :stickoutt . dont race him from a roll thogh, with just i/h/e and hondata they are already taking stock m3's from a roll.
