My 1990 E34 is making a clunking noise from the driveline when I let off the gas at low speeds. Is this my driveshaft support bearing, or what I've heard refered to as the "guibo"? How can I fix this minor problem? Thanks.

When your going from 20-35 mph right?

Most likey, it will be the support bearing.

I`ve had the same problem before, i brought it to the mechanic and he checked it out. at first he said it was the support bearing but the bad news is that our driveshaft design is faulty. There are 2 pieces and they are connect by a 1 way bolt. meaning, once a mechanic pulls it apart to get take the support bearing out, it cannot be put back together. so basically if you`re going to have to get a whole new driveshaft.. roughly $500 for a rebuilt one. =(

but there is hope, have the car lifted and take out the plate covering the support bearing in the middle of the car and have a good look at it. what happened to mine was the bearing was fine, but the outside metal around it broke off on one side so my mechanic welded it back on and it is now stronger than OEM. =) he saved me a couple hundred $$$ so u can imagine how happy i was.

another thing that might be broken is the guibo, which is a black rubber-ish round thing that connects the shaft to the tranny. check and see if its cracked or damaged in any way. this might also cause the noise. it will cost you less than $100 for the part so it`ll be cheaper than a driveshaft. so go get that checked first.

good luck bro. hope this helps

-J- thanks for the abundance of info regarding my post, this will definitely help!
By the way, your car is very clean and mods are done with good taste, I actually have the same car as you (calypso red E34 M20) but currently no mods, since I just purchased it. :shifty

I invade your calypso thread with my Alpine White hotness!!!

But yeah, support bearing and Guibo. Might as well do em both as long as you're up there.
