I just managed to pick up a MINT 3-spoke steering wheel today. It was taken off a 2002 M Roadster. From what I was told, it is supposed to be the same wheel as the E36 M3 (98+) had but the only difference is it has a slightly smaller diameter (~1cm). Can anyone confirm this?

Reason why I ask is because I've taken my 4-spoke wheel off a few times so I'm familiar with the connectors. Looking at this 3-spoke unit, the connector off the slip ring looks different than what's on my 4-spoke. I'm kind of worried it won't fit into the female end of the connector on the steering column.

Also, does anyone know of a site which details the conversion process? I tried to look at Alan T's site but it doesn't look to be up any more.

TIA

2pak,

Got your message and link. Thanks.

From what I can tell, the connector used on that car.diy.info site has only four wires. The airbag connector from the '02 3-spoke has six. None of the color schemes match whats on that site either. The write-up references solid color wires (for the horn at least) but all the wires on the '02 3-spoke are two color combos.

I'm sure physically the wheel will fit. It's just going to be a matter of getting this wiring thing down.

Hyper,

all u gotta worry about is airbag and horn. if the airbag wire is the same and the brown is for horn. but if the airbag connection doesnt work, well....

2pak,

Thats the problem. None of the wires on my '02 3-spoke are the same from whats referenced on CAR.DIY.INFO's site. The six wires I have coming out of the slip ring are:

1. brown with black stripe
2. brown with red stripe
3. blue with brown stripe
4. blue with black stripe
5. yellow with brown stripe
6. yellow with black stripe

Anyone else's 3-spoke like this???? Is this how the 98+ M3's 3-spokes are???

No,

3 spokes from late 98 and 99 M3's and 3 spokes from the M Roadster 99-01 im guessing all have the connections that will work in our 98 and before m3's. The connections it has are a blue cable, the horn cable, and the airbag. You do nothing with the blue cable and thats all.
