View Full Version : Debaffled airbox to actual intake - notice more power?

I resently debaffled my air box and like the bit of extra power I got after the OBD-II figured out what was up. I didn't take out the snorkel initially but may now just for the additional intake sound.

Anyway, I previously was planning to buy a PAR intake with shroud and only did the debaffle for fun. Now I'm thinking if I stick with the stock airbox I could route a duct from the spoiler brake cooling intake to the airbox so it gets cold air as others have done and even replace the filter with an ITG for more flow.

I wonder if I'll notice any additional power from the cone filter on a tube? Anyone have any experience going from a debaffled airbox to a decent intake w/ shroud? I know the intake will generally be louder but want to know if anyone noticed more power.

Thanks,

anyone care to guess?

Also if I buy a chip for my car with de-baffled airbox I'd specify that the chip be set up for use with an intake. Make sense?

If you do a search you will probably find a link to some dyno plots that were posted by (i believe) kevlar about a year or so ago, that showed a 3 hp gain or so by removing the baffle.

As far as routing tubing from the brake duct, don't even bother. In europe they have a snorkel for the airbox that draws air from that duct, and it is a waste. Just run around with the baffle out until you have money to upgrade to an aftermarket intake. I recommend the ECIS intake (www.ecisbmw.com), and you can search for other opinions as well.

Oh, and intakes don't make a difference as far as aftermarket software configurations. There is only one software flash or chip (intake or no intake).

I have a K&N drop in and a debaffled airbox. It made a nice sound and seemed to pull a little harder in the upper RPM's. The filter makes a big difference in sound. Now I have a PAR and it sounds to same to me except maybe above 5000 RPM where it's a tiny bit louder. The car doesn't pull any harder to my but dyno. Not sure I'd do it again, but now I have a K&N to sell.

If you really want to feel a difference, get the URI pulleys. They make a very nice improvement in how the car pulls, especially down low.
