View Full Version : UUC TSE Sound- How Quiet?

Gents,
I have a '97 M3/4 that has a UUC exhaust with DTM tips(about 6 months old). I like the exhaust a lot but I actually have had some complaints lately from my neighbors about how loud it is.
I used to have an AC Schnitzer w/oval tip and it was pretty quiet.
I am considering the UUC TSE and I would like to know from somebody who owns one whether or not the TSE is a significantly quieter exhaust than the regular UUC exhaust.
Thanks,
Technov

I have a B&B and I'm in the same situation...we just moved into a new house and the neighbors are not happy with me.
I'm also interested in the TSE.

I helped a friend install a TSE on his M3 a few weeks ago. It was pretty damn loud, somewhere between a Stromung and a TriFlo in loudness.

That's exactly what I don't want. Louder than an AA is not an option for me.
Whew, glad I didn't go for one of those.

i run the TSE on my 95. it's certainly not a quiet exhaust, but it does fall below the 'louder' of the exhausts out there. i have another exhaust on my other 95 right now and when i get into the 'TSE' car, it seems quite civilized. where the TSE gets quieter is on the highway at cruising speeds. personally, i think it's a great compromise.

I posted a 10-point subjective loudness scale a few weeks ago.
The short version:
1 - stock M3 exhaust
6 - AA
6.5 - TSE
8 - System•U
10 - B&B

OK, makes sense.
Where would you say an SS is, 3 or 4?

That seems reasonable.
I've had my TSE for about a month now. I would say it is loud, especially at the track under accelleration, but the sound is good. Its not irritating except right at 2000rpm. There is something magical or harmonic about that engine speed. At 2000rpm, the drone is really annoying! But at cruising speed on the highway, it is not bad at all. But you know if when you are on the gas!
In any case, I think it sounds great and I definitely noticed an improvement in power at the track.

This is what I did not like about the Rogue setup, which is also a twin silencer type design. It was also too loud for my tastes.
I don't get any such resonance with my AA. A friend with an SS says he gets no such behavior as well.

I did revise the scale slightly from my original post a few weeks ago. Here it is:
stock: 1
SS: 2
AA: 6
UUC TSE: 6.5
UUC SYS•U: 8
B&B: 10

compared to other exhausts, i don't think the TSE is that bad. obviously, it's a very subjective matter.
frayed, maybe you can catch a ride with someone who runs a TSE. i'd be happy to let you hear mine if we lived near eachother.

My Stromung droned at 2k for the first 200 miles or so, but now it's completely smooth sounding :D

Someone should put this on a web page somewhere - it's one of the questions that gets asked over and over.
Perhaps when your independant guys (Eurospeed??) are dyno'ing your exhausts as stated on your webpage you could ask em to do a standard sound bite of each one?
Other than that, could bf.com compile a faq - put all of the useful stuff in it, the questions that come up time and time again - fan delete, car weights, exhaust loudness. I think bimmer95 came up with a semi decent way of taking sound clips with a computer mike?

You are such a shameless thread hijacker! :astromile
I heard the Stromung cures baldness, impotence, Democratic-party feelings, and can hunt down OJ's "real killers"! :D

BTW, although the UUC exhaust would not be appropriate for me, I did hear that it made good power in independent testing. Look for a big honking shootout in European Car in the next month or two.

That's why I've been trying to sell so many of them before the elections next month ;) As for the impotence, I'll have to ask Brian's fiance and see how "things" have been since we swapped out his Stromung for a TSE a couple weeks ago :devillook
