I recently purchased a new m30 and found out it is coming with a lot more than i paid for.

One of those is the front half of a getrag 265 (bell housing and clutch). Being as a 5-speed conversion for an m20 e34 is signifigantly cheaper, i was wondering if i could buy one of those and just bolt it up?

a 5 speed from an m20 won't bolt up to an m30 at all.

I think the getrag 265 was the last transmission with a detachable bellhousing. So, I do not think you can connect another trans to that bellhousing. Plus, you can buy a 265 for less than 500$, easy. That trans has been shown to reliably hold more than 400 ft-lbs stock; I do not know why you would not want to convert to it if you are converting the car from an auto-> manual.

the 525i did come with a 260/5. I was wondering if all the other parts would fit, like the drive line, cross member, shifter linkage, etc...

The Getrag 260 and 265 are very similar. I would imagine the hardware will fit just fine. Based on the data on realoem, the driveshaft length between a Getrag 260 and Getrag 265 equipped 535 is the same.

what about the 525i drive shaft. It has the same tranny, so is the drive shaft, and brace, and shifter linkage the same?

The driveshaft length is usually a function of two things: the chassis type and the transmission. If we have established the transmission length is the same between the 260 and the 265, and the chassis is the same e34 before and after, then everything should fit exactly as it did before. If I recall right, the majority of the changes between the 260 and the 265 are internal, rather than external in nature.

Do you know if the part numbers are the same? I got to thinking if the bell housings were any different then the drive shaft and linkage might be different.

Which parts? You can look up the PNs on realoem really easily.

well, i was just wondering if anybody has seen the shifter linkage, drive shaft, and brace of both a 535i and 525i. That would help a lot, but i will try the part numbers
