View Full Version : Windshield wipers sometimes stop working

Usually during a heavy rainfall I will be driving for 20 mins or so and my wipers just stop working all together, then 10-20 mins later, they just come back on. While they are off, I can move the wiper control to whatever position I want and it does nothing, also the washer will not spray or anything.
Anyone else seen this issue, or have any good ideas where to start looking.
*Edit* They stop moving, as in no motion, as in no side to side wipey wipey.

I had the exact same problem. Strangely, it started working after I replaced the battery.

if they stop working after 16 Seconds, then the general module is not recievirg the park signal. the GM needs to see a park signal or else it will think something is jammed. and will disable the wiper to save the motor.
also you may want to check the voltage Drop on the Wiper Double Relay
the contacts may be worn.

Mine also does the same thing. If you find out anything let me know.

If and when I get an answer, I will post up here with what fixes it.

Still doing it, and I have heard of many others with the same problem but still no resolution.

Ttt
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?
I have the exact same problem with my 2000 323i... I can occassionally get the wipers to start working again by shutting off the motor, removing the key and then restarting... not exactly a good solution on the expressway...
Thanks

If its always after 20 minutes or so then maybe theres a dodgy connection in the wiring/relay that expands when hot just enough to break the contact?
Sounds like you need to pull over once its stopped working and get a continuity tester onto the wiper motor terminals as a starting point.
I use to have the same thing on the indicators on a 911 , but I sold it before I even started looking!

This sounds like a relay problem to me as well. I have seen this kind of thing on several Porsche 911's that I have owned. Try swapping a relay from another location and see if the problem moves with the relay to the new location.

If it was me, id take the e-box cover off and check for flooding in there. The wiper relay is down low and loves to suck up any water that gets in there.

I just experienced a similar problem...wipers inop and no washer..then maybe the washers work for a second and the wipers want to..then nothing... Is it a common relay for washers and wipers..and where is it located? e-box?
Thanks for any assistance

I read on another forum it was the wiper relay because mine does the exact same thing and I'm looking for the location of that relay right now, as soon as I find out what the relay look like i will change it and post

there are electrical boxes in a few locations on these cars. some by the battery, some under the glove box and some under the passengers side cabin filter.
I know that behavior I described is normal with the wipers slowing and stopping with the car's speed- I just wanted to be sure these guys aren't tearing their hair out over a nifty feature. lol

Take wiper back off. Then cycle the motor. Then put blades back in position you like.

I think there's also relay K11, 9 pin in E-Box, which does the low and high speed function. (yours is 2000 528?). Try replacing that one too.
Also check whether the drain in motor compartment is clear, not blocked. Don't want water getting trapped in compartment, causing wiper motor and switch to get wet inside, then shorting out until it's able to dry out a few days later and then it's working again.

I know this is an old thread, but there are recent replies in it.
I had my wipers go out on my tonight for about 10 minutes then start again..
I did so research and it appears that it is probably a relay.
It is supposedly under the cabin filter box on the passenger side in a relay box.
Part number is 61-36-8-384-505
I found one for under $13 and ordered it. I am hoping it will work.

Stu. Would you please rephrase your process? I am not clear what you said you held the wipers down. Thanks !

+1 wiper relay. Relays wear out and start to stick. Search "e39 wiper relay". The relay is around $40 and it takes about 10 minutes to replace. You may want to spray some PB Blaster around the bolt heads for the relay box and let it sit for 30 minutes. The nuts are set the plastic and can strip out leaving you with a spinning bolt.
