My warranty expired March of this year. I was considering extending it but changed my mind at the last minute. Here's why and I would appreciate some feedback from you guys.

Back when I first got my M3, early in 2000, the previous owner was kind enough to refer me to the old bimmer.org board. I remeber inquiring upon the durability of our cars. I was so amazed at the animal inside begging to be unleashed and was concerned if hard dirving would show the same results as most common cars. Ahyhow, the only negativity I heard was minor wear and tear issues and little things such as water pumps or 02 sensors going bad. Overall, the cars seemed to hold up very well.

Thus the dilemma. Why should I pay $1,500+ to extend my coverage another 30K miles or $2000+ to etend it another 60k(It's pushing 40k now)? I would expect a few minor problems here and there with some of the gadgets and gizmos but that's all. My car was thouroughly inspected prior to purchase and passed inspection 2 with flying colors. I more than baby her as well.

Say 10 things went wrong with the car, minor issues, costing an average of $150 times per visit. I would only barely be breaking even.

Was I right in passing up the warranty or should I go ahead and dish out the money? Keep in mind I run an IT consulting company and take a look at the tech industry right now. That's right, I'm watching my expenses to say the least.

Thanks!

i say $2000 for another 60k miles of carefree driving is CHEAP. here's my story,,, just one month after i warrenty went out, I had the waterpump/radiator failure and this service set me back a few hundred. then later, i had a fuel pump failure and fuel distributor failure, and this cost me over a thousand. then a little later, i had a crack in my front engine housing that resulted in an oil leak and this cost me close to a grand also. so, that adds up to over $2k,,,,

but i was wise enough to extend my bmw roadside assitance, hahahahaha, and i was able to get my car towed for free in each of these three incidents. so extend your roadside service too!!!!

Sorry to hear about that, it seems that you are driving a heavily modded 328is ..that would explain the problems. Especially if you are really pushing anywhere close to 440HP. I assume you have the SC?

I was curious as to feedback from those who are driving more similar cars to mine.

Thanks anyway!

Yeah, cute. But I'd still appreciate feedback from E36 M3's close to stock w/ out SC.

I agree. Its much like buying life insurance for your car. If you don't spend that 2k, you will probably neglect to fix many minor problems, thinking that u can rather save that money. But with the insurance, u can get all the service you want. Another reason why you would want to get insurance is because of the chance of disaster. If something happens to be wrong with your car that costs 5k plus labor, you will be happy you spent that 2k. Its just piece of mind.

Has anyone bought an extended warranty from an online company like warrantydirect.com? What are your experiences and which is the best company?

Good points CY. I actually was going with 1source on the web, until I realized I was only getting up to 60k for $1k, not an additional 60k. I have 38k now. Plus they put on the contract i had 35k, so I lost 3k miles of coverage right out the door. You have to be careful with the details. Warranty direct seemed to be the best deal, with an apparently good repuation. I think they were offering me up to 75k for $1400. If I'm still driving my M3 2+ years from now it will be on the purely track anyway. So I won't need more coverage.

Would appreciate if any one has a different point of veiw to share.

Thanks,

V
