transmission swaps: e30

I am looking to find out which transmissions fit with which engines etc...

are all e30 tranny's interchangeable?

I own a 325is, seems a lot of ebay transmissions are 318 ones.

can someone shed some light on me?

Basically follow this rule :

Single cam 4cyl's must stick to single cam 4cyl trans .

Twin-cam 4cyl's must stick to twin-cam 4cyl trans .

Six cylinder cars stick with 6cyl trans .
But the "eta" cars from 84-87 must use another "eta" trans .
The "i" cars and the 88' "e" (superEta) can use any 6cyl trans including those from an "eta" .

Oh and of course there are exceptions and lots is possible with a little creativity but lets not split hairs .
