I have 8.5 rears and right now i have 235/40/17 on them and they are pretty close to dead.
My question is could i fit 245's or 255's on the 8.5 rim.
im lowered on eibach springs and have no rubing issues now.

you can run a 245/40 or even a 255/40
My 1996 M3 has 245/40/17 stock in the rear on 8.5" rim. This is how it came from the factory.
you can run a 245/40 or even a 255/40
Told ya dude ;)

I run 235/40-17 Bridgestone RE050As on 8.5 wide M Double Spoke IIs all around. Great performance, handling, looks, and you can rotate the tires for extended tire life!

I have 8 x 17s with 235/45s on them now. Can i go up to a 255/40 on the rears or are the wheels too narrow for that.

255 is kinda too wide for 8" wheels.

got pics?None. I can say that the Bridgestone RE050A (and S03s) are about as wide as normal 245/40-17s mounted on 8.5 x 17 wheels--only shorter in overall diameter--9.7 x 24.4 (235/40-17 RE050A) vs 9.8 x 24.8 (normal 245/40-17). Stick, handling, and ride smoothness/quietness are OUTSTANDING with the RE050A!
235/40-17 Continental Sport Contact 2s have similar dimensions on 8.5 x 17s; 9.7 x 24.3--but I have no experience with these tires. They have a weight advantage over the RE050As at only 22 lbs for the 235/40-17 vs the 24 lbs with the 235/40-17 RE050As.
I would not run tires that are too wide for the wheel width--you really don't achieve a contact patch advantage b/c the wheel rim width restricts the tire's section width. For every 0.5-inch of wheel rim-width increase, the tire's section width increases 0.2 inches (from the tires' specs measured off of the base spec rim width).
Ideally for a 255/40-17, you'd run a 9.5-wide rim to truly take advantage of a 255's tire section width (ideally you'd run a 9-wide rim for a 245/40-17 for the same reason).

bridgestone's website shows the 245/40/17 RE050A PP with dimensions when mounted on an 8.5" wheel and listed for 8-9.5" wheels, so i think it'd be ok. The 255/40 is listed at 8.5-10, so you're at the low end at that point. I think I'm going to do the 245/40/17 on my doublespokes pretty soon.
