Some advice for those of you with E34 540 autos. Get the valvebody updated. You will save yourself many thousands of $$ someday.
I had my reverse gear explode, and it is THOUSANDS to fix.
Not fun.
Anybody done a six speed swap in a 5 series ?

Never done it, but that's got to be one expensive swap :eek:

Talk to Simeon with the blown 740iL 6-speed by VAC motorsports.

simeon had to use several M5 parts though, which raised the cost significantly. with the 540 all you SHOULD need is:

trans
drive-shaft
pedal-support/pedals/linkage
clutch/flywheel/bellhousing
rear diff? (or not and keep a lower ratio?)
correct engine-copmputer/software.... that SHOULD be most of it.

also, since IIRC it has a hydraulic clutch, you will likely need to change some of the brake-system plumbing since they share fluid... again IIRC.
