I am going to begin pursuing the sale of my newly-acquired e28 535is auto. Asking $4800
Here's the deal- 1987 535is auto. 100% stock. 98k, runs like a top and I don't say that lightly. I have 100% faith in this car. I want $4800 and the only reason I am willing to part with it is I want to mess with it too much. I'm afraid once I start, I won't stop. It's a survivor and it bothers me to think of 'molesting' it and turning it into a bottomless money pit. I have an e34 M5 that is perfect and I want an e28 M5 to go with it. After driving this one and realizing how good they CAN be (I've driven a lot of junk) I know the e28 M5 is what I really want. I won't be tempted to mess with a nice M5.
-I have no idea what shocks are on the car but they are AWESOME. I seriously cannot believe how well damped this car is. A little stiff but really, really nice suspension.
-Great interior (for the year) with only minor wear on the drivers seat and issues with the panel below the steering column. No tears or cracks, only wear lines. It's not new mind you. I am giving condition for the year, not compared to new.
- Slight wiggle to the drivers seat, a little TLC would do it.
- Dash is gone (aren't they all?)
Heat, AC, everything works well
- all windows work, locks, seats, everythign electrical is great. Even the headrests.
- It drives PERFECTLY. Straight, no wobbles or worries. It's up there with any car I've driven of the era.
- Pulls awesome. Very nice motor.
- tiniest 3.5 valvetrain ticking.
- Lumpy 3.5 idle. It's not as smooth as the 2.8 or 2.5 mind you.
- NEW ITEMS-
- tires
- battery
- exhaust
- plugs, rotor, wires
- gas tank
- transmission selector switch
- brakesand rotors
- thermostat
- recent oil change
- paint
- Recent shocks
- several new suspension bushings.
THE BAD- The paint is new but it was a quick job. I love perfect paint and have no issues with the quality of the paint but it was just a respray. No indication of rust repair. It looks great but it's no show car as some dents and dings were simply painted over. it is the original color and all of the door jambs, etc are all great.
- temp guage is out
- with the tranny in the Economy mode, it goes into nuetral sometimes when you let off and coast. Goes right back but something to be aware of.
- slight squeaking from rear doors while driving. I am told it is a hinge out of adjustment.
- rear window bumps a little when going down. never gotten any worse or better.
-OBC is stuck on metric. Probably needs ot be replaced. $20 on Ebay.
-steering wheel is 20 degrees of center.
Otherwise, it;s an awesome e28 with tons of pull. It aint new but looks and runs great.
I bought it this year and have never driven it in the snow. It was traded in to Herb Chambers BMW in Boston by the original owner (original dealer as well) in June of '05. Since then, it has only seen 3000+/- miles and was totally gone through by the guy I bought it from. I have the original owners name and address, original owners manulas, Bentley manual, etc. She owned it for 16.5 years and only racked up 95k. I don't think it saw much snow and was cerainly not abused by any stretch.
I know my price is high but a female owned, nearly original owner car is a rare find. It won't hurt my feelings to keep it and just put it next to the M5 in my toasty, heated garage.
Anyway, sorry for the novel.
