Looking to upgrade my wheels to 17"ers - currently have stock 16" premiums on my 328i. There is a wheel / tire shop near me who will take trade in wheels toward refurbished oem's. I've been told the selection is good and can get them for about half the price of new. Only a 30 day warrenty though.

Should I consider it or is it too risky?

Thanks gents.

Which wheels are you looking for and how much do they cost?

There are good wheel refurbishing/refinishing jobs, and there are bad ones.

Ask the wheel/tire shop about the company that refinishes/refurbishes the wheels. Then investigate to find out if that company's customers are happy. Ask about their guarantee. Find out what they'll do for you in case the clearcoat cracks or yellows, or if you find out that a wheel isn't true.

you're probably better off buying a used set from this board and going on to sell your old ones the same way. That way u cut out the middle man and save some mulas.

Thanks for the replies guys-

I just got back from the shop. They do everything in-house (sanding, painting etc.). I'm not sure what the actual style is, they're the traditional sport wheels that come with a 3 series (same wheels as in the picture below). He showed me the wheels, they look brand new. Price: $150 / wheel and $150 per tire (new michelens - 235-40-r17s). Everything including install for $1,200. Problem is this is with trading my current wheels and tires in. Not sure about the deal - any thoughts?

I agree with Monterey. It might be better (and you might save some money) if you purchased used wheels from a forum member. That way you'd still have the factory finish. The refinished wheels may look good now, but what will they look like after a couple of years of driving?

Does the shop offer any kind of warranty on their refinishing work?

30 day warrenty against defects. Doesn't sound too promising.
I agree, they may not look so hot in a couple of years. Where on the forum is the best place to look?

Keep checking the Buy-Sell-Trade forum. Or post a want ad there. It may take some patience to find what you want.

30 days for defects? The gentleman who refinished my wheels guarantees his work forever. He's a craftsman.

Edit: Sorry...I guess I didn't see the mention of the 30-day warranty in your original post.

Those wheels look like the Type 44's. I have seen more than a few sets for sale here (and on eBay) for $400 - 600. Usually with 'normal' wear and tear.

$150 each for Pilot Sports (if that is what they were offering) isn't bad though - Tire Rack has them on special for $178.

If you really like those wheels fine, but if it was a $ thing, know that I have unfortunately had to pass (due to financial reasons) on several sets of wheels here much nicer for $1200 or less (incl BBS RC's, RK's, ACSIII's). I cannot wait until I have money again.

I don't think that you are any worse off going with the refurbed wheels, you will just be spending more money. There is a lot to be said for having some sort of warranty, however...

Thats not a good deal, especially for refinished rims. go get some off ebay or try looking on the forums, and get some kumho tires for cheap. All in all it should be around $900-$1000 for the type 44's with brand new tires in good condition. and get them mounted at costco or sams or something for cheap.

I might be selling my wheels if all goes through well. The have 8200 miles on them. They have the stock Continental Sport tires. Make an offer.
