Last night i went to the local IN n' Out to grab a late night snack, and i saw this guy i used to go to school with. We start chating it up and he says he recently bought a silver WRX, i was impressed, and asked him if he had raced it? he said of course and he's never lost, and wiped the floor with M3's in the corner's and even the freeway, well that got my blood flowing and i wanted to go, but i had my good ol' 220ib buddy with me making me think twice, i said F@$K it ill race him, so we get out on the feeway ( me 99 m3/2dr ) and hit it on the on ramp, i am behind him and having to break to avoide hitting his rear, we then pull out to 4 lane's and no traffic and i slam 3rd, doing about 90 i begin to pull hard on him and 4th it was over all i was doing was pulling farther away , i shut it down at 120 and he flies by me, we stop at the gas station and he's kinda moody, but he admits defeat, it was nice walking on a WRX, i actually expected to loose, but hey, im happy. I have great respect for the WRX, its a incredably deal and a amazing car, but i wouldnt trade M power for anything.

WRX's have the advantage off the line with AWD. At speed I'm not surprised you took him, they have AWD working against them and aerodynamics also. Just watch out if he gets some mods.... Good job though!!

Even though the WRX has AWD, it's still a slower car than your 99 M3, I think they would do the 1/4 stock in about 14.3 or so, and I'd expect your M3 to be faster.

Yeah, no surprise with the kill. BUT off the line, you would be playing catch up.

Was the WRX modded?

Nice run! Personally, I don't fear the AWD at launch... :devillook

Good work, 3rd gear onto the highway is one of my favorites!

Not if you've perfected your launch like Dave. :)

I've seen a lot of timeslips from WRX's and S4's, most are getting 1.8x 60' times, which is what I got in my car pre-mods on OEM tires...

Give me a WRX, some tweaks to the turbos, and 4 drag radials, I guarantee 1.5x 60' times... ;)

lightly, with exhaust, intake and some other tweaks, as well as lw wheels and droped, and i have intake, chip, and exhaust, the WRX is all up to the driver, ive seen cars lightly modded pull sub 14 time's and other's go high 15's i think its really up to who's driving the car, and ya gotta love 3rd in the M, the intake really howl's and it just doesnt stop pulling!!!

Those WRXs are nice cars but they run out of umpfff at 70 or so. I've been against a modded WRX (looked and sounded modded)on the freeway and it pulled strong, but the M was behind him waiting for the opportunity to paaassssssssssss!!!

Well, with about $5000 on the TurboXS Stage IV (which I think Phillip has) the WRX is well into the 12's in the quarter. It costs twice that to get the M3 there. Oh well. :)

True, Rel, but it's still an Impreza, not an M3. If you wanna look at it like that, get one of the last f-bodies off the dealer lot at a couple g's below invoice (think low $20K's) and invest in some ET Streets, say hello to the 12's...

WRX's run like bats out of hell until around 85 [top of third]. 4th and 5th are both overdrive gears, so performance there suffers.

4th is an overdrive gear in the WRX? Meaning 3rd gear is 1:1???

I had an interesting chat with my boss today, the one with the WS6. As excited as I am about the new Jap cars coming in, those f-bodies are a helluva bargain. The one thing I don't like about the f-bodies is how heavy they feel to me when I'm driving it. I'm guessing the WRX feels very nimble, similar to my M3. Anyway, OT, but I think for cheap dragstrip racers the f-bodies are still the way to go.

Cheap balls in general, the pony cars are where it's at... :D

Come on now, everyone knows the WRX is an off-road vehicle. Show me an f-body that can handle the rain and mud. Yeah right, like we'd ever put the WRX in mud. :D

By the way, the WRX's that are pulling 12's (and now 11's) are running as-is with backseats and spoilers. The guys with 11 second WRX's are shooting the juice though.

People say AWD is easy to launch, but I gotta say it's tough to do it perfectly. I either don't rev it enough and bog or over-rev and burn the clutch.

///M Roadster,

Just to chime in here a bit...I think the current US WRX 1/4 mile record without nitrous is 11.97 by Phil at TurboXS...someone else hit high 10's on the bottle...with lots of part swaps...japanese STi model parts...probably not running a US spec motor or tranny...regarding the AWD launch...i totally agree...it is very tough...to "bog" or to "burn"...that is the question...hey, btw, sweet roadster ya got!

First off, Mark, thanks for posting and welcome to bimmerforums!

About the clutch burn smell, I was complaining about that to Dave (Silverstreak) when I was trying out his kill-your-clutch launch technique. I just don't have the heart to do it (at least not often)... but Dave says you get used to it. :)

Hey there, fellow WRXer! Welcome to bimmerforums! I hope you'll stick around and join the family.

Actually, Phil and a guy named Al were duking it out a couple weeks ago. I think Al edged Phil in the end, but they both made 11 second passes.

The WRX pulled a respectable 255awhp (Mustang dyno) a couple weeks ago, but we haven't finished the dyno tuning. Running pretty rich to avoid detonation, but we may up the boost (18psi now).

Thanks for the warm welcome! I look forward to talking cars and learning more about bimmers.

From what I have read on i-club, this guy Al (from new mexico i believe) has the Sti motor and tranny and has spent loads of money on the car...and if his time was at high altitude, i'd say that is very impressive

This is with the Stage 4 package right? Did you take it to TurboXS for the dyno run? I took my Stage 2 to Cobb for dyno runs and tuning and had a pretty awful experience so I'm back to a stock stage 2 map. The numbers on my signature reflect my first run at cobb before they started the "detuning". I'll eventually go to stage 4, I'm just trying to spread out the expenses....

Mark,

TurboXS has a Dynapack (sp?) or Dynojet, which will read higher than a Mustang dyno. Our WRX was dyno'd on a Mustang at Curry's Auto. I'm sure I would have hit that advertised 270 whp had we done it on a Dynopack.

Al's time was here on the East Coast and impressive no matter what.

Well it's funny to hear an AWD guy say that it's harder than you think to launch it. Bimmerforums is messing up all my preconceived notions. Just like when the f-body guys tell us that their cars actually handle well. J/k. :D
