How much HP does the m6 have? How much HP would you end up if you S/C??

Theres another thread in the 6 series section with pictures of the engine. He is quoting around 400hp, i forget if thats to the wheels or not, but there is significant work to be done to the engine to get it there. I think he said it cost him around $6k to do it, but it was from scratch, and there is a competitive turbo charger kit offered, forget by whom, that gets im guessing the same or more horsepower for around the same price. Ive been wondering about doing a s/c on an m30 motor, but first i have to get a 6, and i dont think ill have enough dough to do it, so im going to build myself a euro motor.
hope this helps...

That's just a regular old M30 motor as well.

I've always thought that the S38 would lend itself to S/C'ing a bit easier, since the intake plenum/afm set up is on the same side of the motor as the valves themselves.

the M30 makes things tight by locating the intake on the exhaust side of the motor.

SO - that's about 400 that Shawn's getting from a moderately tuned 12 valve M30.

I would assume/guess that you could coax close to 500 from an S38 with moderate tuning.

But it'll take you a hell of a lot of work to get there. -

and it's one expensive motor if you FUBAR it in the process :help .

Turbochargers and superchargers usually give about a 50% power increase if they are boosting 7-9 psi, obviously higher boost would give more power; but it's pretty proportional.

Go look up the thread "supercharger pictures" for my set up (right now, on page 3 of threads). As the previous postings say, it's a hugely complex undertaking and I'm not too keen to recommend the process to anyone without serious fabrications skills (moving pieces like the radiator, brackets/pulleys for supercharger and intercooler, deleting the fan for an electric, etc.). The price has worked out to about the same, custom SC (DIY) vs. TC kit installed. :(

As for hp, clearly the turbo set-up is going to give you more HP. I probably get something like 350-400 bhp, but that's because of other internal upgrades on top of the SC (hotter cam, port and polish, minor increase in cubic inches, bigger exhaust, etc.). Though the "instant on" and "whining" audio track is way cool! Fitting for the tinted glass and big subs in the trunk! :buttrock

The vendor for the turbocharger kit is TCD (www.turbochargingdynamics.com). I've bought various stuff from them before and they are always helpful and have been quite patient with the fuel management issues I've had as well. Some day this year, the plan is to take the car down to their shop and really work out the bugs (they've never had their hands on the car yet, so no blame to them).

Hope that helped!

the stage 1 turbo is lets say $4k after taxes/shipping etc. how much horse would one get youd think after that was installed...and it seems relatively simple compared to your set up shawn...looks almost like a bolton, at least with out an intercooler.

That that would stick an S38 at about 375 hp after an install.

With similar mods to Shawn - I wouldn't think that 500 hp would be unobtainable.

I've heard of S38's that are turboed making close to 8-900hp.

Someone put an S38 into an E30 M3 and turboed it - that's the one I'm talking about -0 something sick like 8-900 hp.

EEP, thats quite insane. I have hear fairy tales of the s14 motor getting around that much horsepower too, for about a half hour or so:eyecrazy. I would hope that this someone with the s38 only races this car, it seems a little bit overkill to have a motor worth more than your own house on the street. and if that motor has that many ponies, would it even be able to pass emissions? I would imagine that the more boost you have and everything that the state emissions people would be pretty pissed at you...more power to him then :buttrock.
