I was driving the other night and the service lights and the seat belt and all the other lights just came on and then the needles went down to zero I have been told this is common fault on a E36 but can any one tell me how to fix it

your bmw is broke, time to get an m3.... JUST KIDDING. i have no idea. im sure someone does though.

Make sure one of the connections behind didn't come loose. This would be the easiest thing to check for.

loose conections can do this, it is quite common, but often only fixed by a new cluster. the cluster things looses power for a sec, and restarts itself

i have this problem. please update when you find a fix
hasnt done it so much recenetly. i phoned two main dealers but they were unaware of this problem.
my fog light was cracked and was carring alot of water, since i removed the water it hasnt been as often happening. i renewed the fog today also. also fixed the wiring problem in the boot/trunk.
i know a friend who replaced dash and it stopped for a while, but now is happenign again ... he also has broken fog's

check your alternator/drive belt</PRE>
mine has small cracks showing and may be slipping slightly
and not driving the alternator 100%. this is what il be replaceing next
