Ooo..ooo...they have people that know that stuff.
What are they called....ah.....mechanics.
Ask one. They really aren't bad people.
(I am not a mechanic, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night)

Chances are it's the power steering fluid--a leak.
If you get it when you turn the wheel, particularly the further you turn the wheel, then it's the PSF, and you have a leak. You can also check under the car in the AM, and if you see a wet spot--bingo.
THis could be expensive if you need to replace the whole rack, but that's where you have to take it to a mechanic.
Take it to a BMW mechanic, but not the dealer!

This isn't the steering wheel tho. This is a screetching, which almost definitely is the power steering fluid being low. Check your manual and fill the power steering fluid resevoir with the appropriate fliud ( I think ATF fluid--but check the manual to be sure ). You should be able to see a leak below your car after a few hours of sitting, as mentioned before. Good luck.

Check your PS level as said before. I *think* it's ATF Dexron 2 type fluid.

I have this problem but only when I first start up the car over night, and it's my first turn of the wheel. Any ideas?

Another vote for checking power steering. According to the Bentley, it's Dextron type III automatic transmission fluid.

Mine did the saem thing, it was the PS, its under the airbox and labled as ATF. It will go down over time (a year or so) so check it once and a while
