I think this should be stickied it would help a lot of the california people out...
Kind of like the dyno thread except instead of dynos did you pass california smog LEGALLY...If you have a hook-up in the business then it doesn't count...

Please list your mods that affect emissions and if you did or did not pass smog.
If you did not pass smog please list why.

'92 Stock Passed!
'92 w/Pullies, Chip, CAI Un-known, havn't had to smog yet.

I'm interested to see if people with injectors/exhaust's have passed, but everyone let the list begin...

Well, you'll have to take your CAI out and replace it with your stock airbox...

Exhausts don't matter. Injectors might run rich, depends on the programming you're running with it.

I've got a supercharger, but it's carb legal... we'll see what the #s look like!

What about cams? Yeah I know I'll put in the airbox when I goto smog, but was wondering if ppl with cams/euro hfm/bbtb/headers...actually pass smog or do it illegally...

Yeah, I'm gonna throw some cams in probably in May, so we'll see. I'll probably have to find a friend of a friend of a friends cousins brother to help me pass. :embarrasm

Do you mean, even if your intake has a CARB sticker, it won't pass visual? That really sucks.

CARB parts = legal, as long as your have the papers it will pass visual (doesn't mean it'll pass the actual sniff test).

Okay so it seems a chip, cai, and cams will pass...what about exhausts? I mean I don't think headers/cat back would pass unless it was for sure carb legal....but you guys are passing with cat backs only right?

how about track pipes, i've been thinking about a Stromung Exhaust w/ AA trackpipes. but will it pass smog? visual shouldn't bother me too much because i have all my stock parts, just going to swap out the airbox for safe measure.

No way, no how will you pass (legally)with track pipes. They *replace* the cats.

I'm not sure you will pass with cams. Sure, you'll pass the visual, but at idle the HC number might fail.
At least get the cats *hot* prior to the test...

I just passed my smog. I got pullies, m3 exhaust, fan delete, bav. auto coils, and a kn filter with a modified airbox.

If I have my turner chip in, my car doesnt pass. Its really a bad chip. I can smell exhaust fumes when Im at stop lights, with stock chip I smell nothing. Not good for the life of the cats at all. Im getting a diffrent chip.

Here are my numbers:

15 mph: co2% - 15.1. o2% - 0. HC - 20 (ave. was 21, 85 is max). CO% 0.01 (ave. was .06, .50 is max). NO - 6 (ave. was 150, 695 is max).

25mph: co2% - 15.2. o2% - 0. HC - 7 (ave. was 13, 50 is max). CO% 0.02 (ave, was .05, .47 is max). NO - 74 (ave. was 136, 717 is max).

I know some places wont let you do smog with a intake, even if they have the CARB stickers on.

I didn't see the guy look under my car for cats at my last smog, and with a well-tuned engine you may get thru without em... I've heard of it happening. Wouldn't risk it myself, but to each their own...

Does the fan delete mod make you fail smog? I think it may make it run to cool and the cat does not get hot enough?

Enhanced SMOG Areas will make it even tougher for a CA mod car.

1994 325i. Mods: Dinan chip, K&N drop in (if that counts)
I failed the first time even with the car warmed up. The dude was cool and ran it again right after the first and it passed with flying colors. This was on a failing O2 sensor which I recently found out.
