e36 question

did the 325is come with a LSD?? or was it only the e36 m3 and the 94 m-technic that came with the LSD? aslo, what was the final drive of the 325is? thanks.

all e36 came with LSDs.. just different final gear ratios based on engine size and such

Not all E36's came with LSD's... However, I'm not familiar with what yrs/models/packages came with the LSD.

do a search and you'll find this question has been asked many times.. but not all e36's came with LSD. Only e36 M3's came standard with them. There are a VERY few non m3's that came with LSD. The way to check is to jack up the rear end and spin one wheel and see if the other wheel spins the opposite way. Of course don't forget to release your ebrake and to put your car in gear.

automatic 325's came with LSD's I think its the 3.91 gearing.

all 5 speed obd1 325s came with 3.15 final ration no matter what. It was those with the winter package and perhaps some other sort of package that got lsd. Jon, heres a quick basic list of cars - final ratio(5 speed only)

93-95 325 - 3.15
95 M3 - 3.15
96-99 328 - 2.93
96-99 M3 - 3.23

Personally I would go 3.23/3.38 if I had a choice. 3.15 would be the lowest I would want...

There are a few 328's with LSD out there as part of the "cold weather package". VERY rare. I have ASC and an open 2.91...for now :cool

hmmm i could have sworn that the 95 m3 coupe and 97 and 98 m3 sedan AUTO had 3.38s. and the m techs had LSD standard.... wow.. so its going to be nearly impossible for me to buy an e36 and determine if it has an LSD unless i inspect te car in person.... that eliminates a lot of cars! shit

No 328 (NOT A SINGLE ONE) ever had an LSD. Thats it, only ASC. No cold weather package 328 had an lsd either. Yes auto M3's from 97+ had a 3.38. Auto 325's had a 3.91 (don't believe they're lsd, unless its a cold weather).

so far sr20fastback has posted the most correct information that I have been able to gather, although i can't verify the 328 information on never having LSD from the factory (has to be some sort of off the wall option package it was available with)

auto's are all open diff unless it has cold weather package (325)

Basically, unless it's an M, chances are it doens't have an LSD. They were all options or part of a package. I'm not sure about the later ones (OBDII), but I don't think any non-M e36 actually came standard with an LSD. LSD is an option you could get either seperately, or as part of a package (eg cold weather package).

What if the wheels spin freely? I know i have an open diff, but my wheels don't spin opposite. When I spin one, the other doesn't move at all.

Look for the options list under each car you look at. That'll tell you what it has for sure. The list will even have the VIN to make sure it matches the car it's in.

never actually seen the list (but I've never looked for it), but lift under the bottom cushion and pull up (there are two little spring clips, one on each side that hold it down).

and look more misinformation. a few of them in the US did come with LSD, and a lot in Euro did.
