well, actually a couple friends who already knew what they were doing did the fan delete for me, but i had a quick question; the Bentley says the m50 is supposed to hold 11.1 qts of coolant, yet we only used a gal of coolant (bmw of course...4qts) a gal of distilled water (Desert spring :buttrock...4qts) and 2 bottles of Water Wetter (Redline...1qt) leaving me at a total of only 9 qts...i drove the car hard, after reaching operating temp, yet the reservoir level never moved from slightly above the 'KALT' writing (above the cold line by about an inch)...we drained the block completely, yet still only held about 9 qts....what gives?

and yeah, i noticed the difference in how freely the motor revs, it just feels lighter, easier to revmatch, and it just feels peppier....so, great mod for the cost (no more than $100)...the butt dyno says only marginal power gain, but the car feels better without the clutch fan, and the peace of mind of knowing you have nothing to tear your radiator to shreds is nice...

Try some pullies + the fan delete for double the experience. Back to what you were asking htough, its fine that it only took about 9 qts, it taks whatever it takes. Just keep checking for about a week on the level, most importantly, when the car has been cool for a while, like in the morning.

you can bet there were a couple of quarts left in your heater core, some in the block, some in the hoses, etc.

Exactly, did you run the heater during draining(Bennyfizzle)?

When i did the fan delete and pullies I only used 1 gallon of distilled water and like a container and a half of BMW coolant. So I dont think its a big deal just make sure it is above that level mark. Also your supposed to turn the heat on full blast while your bleeding the system.

ya, we bled the sytem according to the bentley...

well i shat myself today, apparently not all of the air was bled, and/or and air pocket decided to let go during some spirited driving...as i parked my car afterwards i notice steam coming from under hood, temp gauge is straight up and down, poop the hood, coolant is everywhere, reservoir is empty, i'm like "OMGWTFONOES!!!" i call bf.c member nonphixion (helped, well, DID the install), tells me to re-bleed the system, i top up, bleed until only coolant is coming out of the bleed screw, problem solved...for now :shifty

cliffnotes: when doing anything coolant related always carry a gallon of distilled water in the car with you until you know for a fact that all the air is out of the sytem, otherwise you're fuct.

Yeah, you really need to monitor it during the first couple of days (and very closely over the first couple of hours). A similar thing happened to me and I had to keep adding coolant over the first 2 days.

did you bleed until you had hot air out of the vents at engine idle and under load? if not, your bound to go down the same road again....
