Hmmmm....

With respect to power:

A recent article in MCsquared magazine details the changes an owner made to achieve 237 hp from 170 hp stock 1.6 liter supercharged engine. I *think* the 0-60 was in the 5.5 - 5.8 range. Not bad from a 1.6 non-turbo.

Of course, some folks have gone to the extreme in preparation, pushing a highly modified version toward 300 hp.

BUT...

MINIs' strengths cannot be measured soley on power. Their strong suit is obviously their ability to handle (in stock form) like very few cars in the world. I've owned a crap-load of leading European sports cars in the last 35-40 years, and the MINI comes the closest to the best all-round stock performer on the street AND the track.

SO...

If you want to go to the drags, choose another car. If you want to autocross or road race, check out the MCS.

BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE...

2007 will see a change from the 1.6L supercharged engine to a 1.6L twin-scroll turbo variety in the new MCS. This should kick the power and driveability up from great to brilliant! Also, with the turbo forced induction, the aftermarket will have a feeding frenzy on upgrade options!

You can read more about the new engine lineup HERE (http://www.motoringfile.com/2004/12/14/new_mini_38_psa_engine_range_in_detail)
