Hey guys, I'm currently researching cars. I would want to get an E36 M3. But the only drawback is that they only came in Coupe (except for the 1998, and even then they seem to sell for 5 - 6k mor ethan they're worth)
So anyways, I just wanted to know if anyone who owns a M3 actually can sit in the back seat comfortably.
I am 5'10" and around 150lbs.... I know in my current car (mazda mx6, sig/avatar) I cannot sit upright in my back seat, i have to lay across both seats..... (but somehow we fit 4 people in the back seat..... of course going to a party :buttrock )
A friend has an e36 318is and i remember it being faily big compared to my car.....
Any comments?

they offered the M3 in sedan form in 97 and 98. u can look at any E36 backseat to get an idea of the room in the back. yes u can sit in the backseat comfortably as long as the front driver and passenger doesnt have their seats all the way to the back, then ur leg room is limited...

i would like to point out that the car length is the same sedan/coupe
as far as i know the interior is almost identical in layout. i had the sedan, now own a coupe and when i sit in the back to clean it (the only time im in the back) the legroom is the same. the extra length on the doors and the way the seats lift and move forwards a bit when you pull the seat back lever makes it very easy for me to get in and out, and thats with the seat set all the way back and all the way down as im a tall guy :)

i couldn't sit in the back with the front seat all the way back & down though as there is no were to put your feet :( (my bro in laws Mrs is 5'2" and very very small, she can sit behind me with no problems though.. i am 6'3" though, so at 5'10" you will be able to drive and sit in the back in comfort as you will have allowed enough legroom pulling the seat forwards and up a bit to account for being under 6 foot.
OK just been outside and sat in the back..
6'3 tall, sitting properly with my head against the headrest my head doesn't hit the roof, but my spiked hair does ! just (needs cutting).
I can sit very comfortable in the back, even sitting with my head straight up as you tend to do its OK, half inch or so, my hair has issues still..
so 5'10 you shouldn't have a problem.
When i assume my usual slouch my hair doesn't hit either...

eh, don't know but i like the sedan, now, if the coupe had sleeker doors then, maybe, sorta like the doors on my car but then again, that wouldn't be a bimmer
but i do like the rims on that coupe........... sexy

I think the rims on the coupe are just ones that came with a different package (lux?).
I have no idea what point you are in your life but we ended up ruling out the coupe because, although we could get the carseat in the back, it would have been VERY awkward to get my daughter into it (she's still rear facing). The rear doors simplify this immensely. I don't really think the back seat in either is especially roomy.
We didn't really find the sedans to be priced higher but I guess that would be a very regional thing. However, we did find more of the sedans to be autos (annoying).
Personally, I think the sedan is hot because its a REAL sport SEDAN. I think that rocks. There are loads of hot coupes on the market, but relatively few sedans. I would have found an E36 (or any generation) M3 Wagon even hotter. But I think I might be a freak (well, except for the guy in that other thread who was thinking about 'making' an E36 M3 wagon)....

BTW- the sedan you pictured looks exactly like the one in my driveway :)

this is exactly what i wanted to hear......... i want a car that i can have for at least 5 - 10 years, (by then i'll prob have a baby)...... something that i can autocross, and yet have passengers in the back w/o them bitch.n and moanin...... my car right now, i'll prob make a beater, and just run the engine to the ground and them put a JDM engine.....
but yeah, really nice real sports sedan IMO

i'm 6'2"ish maybe a little over, and i've sat in the back of a couple e36 m's (coupes) and it wasnt a big deal, for short trips at least. i didnt have a chance to be back there longer than ~15 minute drive, but it was actually pretty comfortable

Estoril was our first choice but every single one we called on was sold almost immediately :(
Good Luck in your search!
To add to all these things, the headroom in a sedan is ~1 inch more than a coupe. If you want specific measurements you can search for the diagrams on here. They have been posted before and they are also in Bentley I think.
OT: I have sort of a thing for my back seat. I find it fun to sit back there if I am letting someone else drive my car. Maybe it is just becuase it is such a radically different perspective.
