I have a helluva rattle in the rear deck of my '87 635CSi. I've done some research in the audio form on this site but all of their suggestions pertain to the 3 series, which seem to be the more popular model among the audiophiles. I tried their suggestions (stuffing sound deadener in the deck below the speakers) to no avail.

Fortunately I listen to mostly rock music which doesn't rattle it too bad, but in the scenarios where I'm listening to rap it drives me crazy. Help!

I never liked the original rear shelf in the 6, so I replaced my rear deck with a custom piece, used machine screws to hold it firmly to metal points in the chassis, and covered that with a good quality piece of interior carpeting (see pics in my for sale ad). Your rattling is likely due to various plastic clips/etc. losing their grasp when the woofer "woofs". Try securing those spots that seem most troublesome with machine screws, then cover with carpet or vinyl-repair materials depending where you have to mount the screws.

Good luck!

I agree, I suspect you have something peculiar to your car, rather than a systematic problem. My sound is fully contained within the trunk -- no "woof, woof" coming out... Do you have any openings to the passenger compartment? That might release some energy and make less of a problem. Just a thought...

no openings other than the miscellaneous gaps that the car came with, for wires, etc to come through on the way to the trunk. Nothing has been cut or drilled.

I guess I'm gonna try the remedy stated above...just get in there and look for loose stuff.

Hopefully this is a stupid question. Do you have a toolbox on your trunk lid? I could see that rattling quite a bit with subs. I couldn't get my 12" type-r to fit in my trunk, even if I wanted to put it in there. I have a feeling my car would slowly just fall apart if there was bass in it.

I do but when I got the car all the tools were gone :(

There's a limited number of configurations that will allow a 12 to fit in the trunk. It's too short in the back, and too short in the front, but it's just tall enough in the middle where the trunklid meets the rear deck. I built a box with a 12" tall front and a 9" tall back, and a stepped drop about 3" behind the sub. It's 2 cubic feet with a 4" tube port, I forget how long...

I originally had built a box that put the sub facing up into the rear deck but for some reason it sounded TERRIBLE so I built another one. I dont know if the bottom of the box was too close to the back of the sub, or if the top of the trunk was too close to the sub, but whatever it was sounded like dookie and had no volume at all.

Now it pounds :) but it rattles :(
