Ran into trouble on a '96 2.8L Head Gasket procedure. First trouble was the timing marks were missing. We thought we solved that and put a screwdriver in the flywheel lock as the locking pin tool didn't quite reach. We thought we were good to go until we got the VANOS off and then started loosening head bolts. We found the socket wouldn't go down on the intake side around number 6. Something is wrong. Before I put the VANOS back on and try to get into timing I need to find a way to figure out how to determine timing. Any ideas? Am I off by 180?:mad

I spoke to a guy I work with. He thinks I should drop some 2' long zip ties down the first three cylinders to determine. Even if I do this I only have a 50/50 chance of being right. So I may have to do this all over again. Or I could check access to all the holes with the tool anyone know if this will work?

The T0 mark is missing. Should be a plate sits behind the Crank Cup. Looks like the speed sensor may be missing also.

Notice the special Head Socket can't get down around 6. Looks like I'm not in timing.

Notice the special Head Socket sits on a head bolt between 1 and 2 just fine.
