Does any body know what's the Width on 20" wheels that could be install on a 2002 540IA with a sports suspension?. I have some 20x10.5 on the back but I don't know what to go with on the front with out doing major work to the vehicle.

"Typical" 20in fitment for E39 is 20x9" front and 20x10" or 9.5" rear in appropriate offsets. 10.5" rear may be a little big depending on size of tire, which normally is 285 or 295 width for 10.5. 275 would be OK, very slightly stretched. Depending on the offset of rears & tire size, you may rub fender lip with the 10.5" rears

Hey guys thanks for the info the reason why I asked is because I bought a set of 20's and they came is yesterday but the size were 20x10.5 rear with some 275/30/20 and 20x8 front with some 245/35/20. The rear wheels are ok because the tires stretched, I put them on the car and it was ok but the front did not stretch at all and the tires look higher then the rear tires. That's why I wanted to see what's the highest width that I can install on the front so the tires can stretch with out hitting the strut or the fender.

Did you have to roll your fenders ?

I'm running 275/35-18s all around on my 97 540 Sport. No front end clearance problems at all. Looks factory stock from the side. Rear lips are rolled. You should be able to fit 285s in the well with no problems IF the offset is correct.

The back is ok (20x10.5) but the front wheels I sent back (20x8). I'm getting some 20x9's with a 3" lip. The back wheels have a 5" lip. I should not have any problems with the front wheels according to the wheel manufacture.

P.S. As soon as I get the wheels on my 540 I'll post a pic.

Find TG5 - he had 20's before he downsized to 19's.

I just got 20X8.5 and 20X10 I rolled the fenders and put M5 wheel liners. Doesn't seem to rub at all with the offset on the new rims, I"ll take some pics real soon.

540i on 20's, check out this tire calculator to help you with sizes:

http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Width issues will depend alot on the offset of the rims you buy. I would suggest going one size in width smaller then you want/need. And if those work out go one size up on your next set.

I'm putting 265's on mine. If they work out and I have room I'll go 275 next round.

Also, this thread may help. It's about 19" rims(I think 20's are crazy and 19's are extreme, but that's just me.)

dy540i, thanks a bunch for the link, I think I found all my answers there:

"I have 19x10 et 22 rear with M5 liners" - Grimpy

" also downsized to from 275/30/19 Potenza S03 tires to 265/30/19 Potenza S03 tires. Now I have no rubbing issues even with 4 people in the car and going over a big dip on the highway. My rear tire is also tucked with no passengers in the car." - Grimpy

"M5 rear wheel liners then get the fenders rolled" - Grimpy

"Problem is a combination of the 275 tire size and how much the car has been lowered (incl. OEM Sport susp), along with the proper offset. The 275 tire size can be the biggest factor since you will gain about 1/2 inch clearance on the overall width by swapping to 265 size. 1/2 inch is about 12mm, which is a lot of adjustment compared to the possible diff's in acceptable offset configurations (i.e., running a +22mm vs. +20mm offset to gain 2mm clearance from the fender lip). Of course the lower the car is, it could bring more of the tire shoulder into play for rubbing and maybe cause rubbing on the non-M5 OEM wheel well liner" - 98M3_4

" I thought plus sizing to 19's would only create a slightly harsher ride. I didn't realize I'd have rubbing issues too. As it turns out, I can't tell the difference in the ride quality" - dy540i

Anyone have a differing opinion then what has been stated above.

Now I'm really interested in hearing about every ones experience in the ride between 18s and 19s. Let me know what you've seen!

Thats acceptable, since their M-pars. But 18's or 19's with the regular finish is the most sophisticted.
